FAREWELL ANDIE
|
Andie with her daughter Margarita.
|
Long-time Yoga Studio South student Andie Lorenz passed away September 21 after living with cancer for four years. When selected as Student of the Month as recently as July Andie said: "Cancer sent me hurtling on a journey full of peaks and valleys, but one thing has remained consistent in my life: yoga" "Even if I can do only a few poses on a given day, the practice always increases my feeling of wellbeing. Increasingly, oncologists are encouraging yoga and meditation." You can read her obituary online by clicking here.
As her yoga teacher I will deeply miss the wonderful energy and courage Andie brought to the studio - Rob

YOGA HIKE AND OTHER BITS AND PIECES
|
A view from Big Elbow Trail
|
Our first yoga hike to Prairie Creek was such a success a number of you have requested another trip. You are invited to do Big Elbow Trail, starting at Forgetmenot Campground at the end of Highway 66 west of Bragg Creek Sunday October 11. The cost of this Thanksgiving Weekend hike is $15, which goes to Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter. I chose the hike because it is flat and has fabulous views. sign up at the front desk and leave your email address. I will contact you nearer the time. The commitment would be about 1.3 hrs driving and three to four hours walking and eating lunch.
Calgary Wellspring Yogathon
YSS's Michele teaching at the Yogathon The 1st Annual Yogathon for Wellspring Centre, supporting people living with cancer, was a great success. "We did our first session in the rain, but the drizzle did not dampen spirits" said organizer Kathleen Crowley. "The weather got better and better as the day progressed. We had 85 participants overall -- five yoga sessions, tai chi, drumming and an informal chat on healthful and healing nutrition. The location was perfect." "Thanks again to The Yoga Studio - North and South for your help and support. Your instructor Michele Gunderson started and ended the day for us and did an amazing job," said Kathleen. Thanks Michele. Click her for the link to Wellspring

Greetings!
More Scientific Support for Iyengar Yoga!
I am always excited to hear of new evidence to support the powerful therapeutic benefits of Iyengar Yoga that I feel in my own body and hear about every day. So I was happy to be referred last week by my sister Heather to a major new $400,000 study of 90 people that showed people with low back pain and depression do better with Iyengar Yoga than those who received standard medical therapy. The news from West Virginia University was reported in the academic journal, Spine. Those who did Iyengar Yoga had lifted mood, less pain, improved function and used less drug. "Proponents of yoga have long described its benefits in reducing back pain, but not everybody was convinced. This is a much bigger, much more rigorous evaluation than had been done before," said Kimberly Williams, PhD, research assistant professor in the WVU Department of Community Medicine. Click here for a link to the study. PS You should be able to see all the pictures and text in this newsletter without distortions or glitches. If your email program is distorting anything, then click on the link at the very top of this newsletter and see the page open correctly in your web browser. Also, if your first name does not display correctly please hit "reply" and let us know so we can fix it. Thank you.

Teacher of the Month
|
Janet MacAllan
Several people suggested to me that I select Janet MacAllan as teacher of the month for October. Since Annette Romuld left in August Janet has slipped very seamlessly into Annette's role as restorative yoga teacher at Wellington Square. And she is proving very popular already. Annette, who came to take Janet's class as a student recently commented: "Instruction is clear and she is very helpful at ensuring everyone is properly set up." Janet herself says she loves the entire process of teaching, from the research and creative aspects of planning a class to the interaction with each unique student. "As someone with 'body challenges' myself, I love helping students move beyond the statement, 'I can't do that' to explore asanas that are safe and transformational." She says that, as a teacher, she strives to create programs that meet the needs of each student, as well as the class as a whole. She is currently working on a series of yoga workshops related to common challenges such as insomnia, menopause, and weight loss.

Pose of the Month
|
Tractioning the spine feels great!
October's Pose of the Month is called Rope Headstand or Rope Sirsasana. It is an important pose with great therapeutic benefits. First, either hang a strong rope like a swing from the ceiling or use one of the five ropes at our Wellington Square studio (under the supervision of a teacher). Stand in front of the rope, holding it on both sides at the low waist. Lean back and swing the legs up and around each rope, bringing the soles of the feet together. Release the grip on the rope and hold the opposite elbows over the head as Kelly is doing in the picture. Hold the pose for as long as you like. Use a blanket around the hips for more comfort or if you bruise easily. The pose tractions the spine and gives many of the benefits of inversions and is beneficial for some back issues and respiratory problems. Kelly is offering a ropes workshop at Yoga Studio North October 24. The rope for Sirsasana

Student of the Month
|
Janice Fraser
Her enthusiasm and commitment to yoga is behind this month's choice of student of the month: Janice Fraser!
"I began Yoga initially at the JCC about three years ago when Kristel Schnellback offered an intro course to home school mothers," Janice recalls. "It was very rewarding and novel to me. I experienced a quietude and gentle joy immediately. Before yoga I was under tremendous stress in my life which expressed itself through serious lower back problems. At one point I was hospitalized and completely debilitated by pain. The doctor suggested physiotherapy, I chose yoga instead." Janice continues: "I determined to participate to the degree my body allowed for and I have not looked back. My lower back is sometimes vulnerable, but through proper alignment and excellent teaching from my instructors I am able to fully engage and improve my yoga practice. "I commit to at least three classes per week and yearn for more. I feel balanced physically, emotionally and mentally because of my yoga practice. It is always a joy, even when my body feels old some days, or my balance reflects a wind storm in the room. Many of the people at the studio have become very good friends. These relationships define themselves by a sense of real integrity. My advice to others is to quote from the artist Bernini: work hard, accept good criticism, and always look for the beautiful."
Congratulations Janice!
