Greetings!
Multi-tasking less effective!
I am one of the worst people for multi-tasking, trying to keep up with the thousand jobs that keep two yoga studios thriving. Now I've just heard news about a fascinating study at Stanford University which confirms what I have always thought. It shows that multi-tasking actually leads to lower achievement and that the minds of multi-taskers are not working as well as they could. Faced with information coming from all directions multi-taskers weren't able to filter out irrelevant information as well, and were slowed down compared with single-taskers. Click here to see the study report.Patanjali, the 'father' of yoga, defined yoga 2,000 years ago as quieting the fluctuations of the mind. That intuitive wisdom is apparently as relevant today as it was then. And maybe the Stanford study gives us a clue as to why you feel peaceful and relaxed when you leave a yoga class after being asked to be present and focused on the here and now! We - and that includes me - are hopefully all learning to do better by learning to do less. PS You should be able to see all the pictures and text in this newsletter without distortions or glitches. If your email program is distorting anything, then click on the link at the very top of this newsletter and see the page open correctly in your web browser. Thank you.

Student of the Month
|
Klara Luker
You could'nt go to yoga classes at the JCC Yoga Studio for long without meeting Klara Luker. This determined lady has been coming to yoga three times a week pretty much since the Yoga Studio moved to the JCC three years ago. Like many others, Student of the Month Klara, started yoga with Yoga Studio South because of back pain. Iyengar Yoga has helped relieve the back pain a great deal, but Klara is hooked and still comes three times a week. "I like it a lot," she says. "It's fun, and it builds strength and boosts the immune system." She tells all her friends to take up yoga to share the benefits she has reaped. "But to see results you have to be dedicated," she explains. Congratulations Klara on being selected as student of the month. . . for showing commitment and persistence with your yoga practice.

Help for the Neck
Few of us have avoided neck pain at some time, as tension draws the shoulders up around the ears. Iyengar Yoga offers welcome relief for that type of neck pain with the help of a couple of yoga straps. Tie two straps together in a large loop. Step into the loop like a hula hoop and hold one end across your back. Pass the other end over your head so it falls down the back, hanging close to the feet. Adjust the length of the loop if necessary so it hangs about two inches from the ground. Holding the two sides of the strap on your shoulders, hook one heel in the bottom of the loop and press down with the heel. Balance with a hand on the wall if necessary. The pressure on the top of the shoulders feels great as it stretches the shoulders away from the neck. An option if you want the strap to pull down on the shoulders closer to the neck, is to tie a third straparound the big loop near the shoulder blades - as in the picture.
