FUN YOGA HIKE
The wonderful thing about running Yoga Studio South is the great people I get to hang out with every day. So it was a pleasure to yoga studio hikeorganize a hike on July 26 with 15 people from the studio and enjoy the sights and smells of Prairie Creek in the Kananaskis. It was wonderful seeing some people out in the wilderness for the first time. And the bonus was raising $260 for Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter. Although rain was forecast it did hold off until we were getting back in the cars to drive home. "Thank you for providing the opportunity to go on the hike.   I had a great time.  Wonderful scenery and great camaraderie," said Lorna, one of the hikers.
Because the hike was so much fun I plan on doing it again at the beginning of October. Watch out for the announcement!

Student of the Month
Julie Jacques
Julie Jacques
Julie Jacques' story of the benefits of Iyengar Yoga is truly inspiring. She spent 6 months last year taking care of her sister in her final illness in Los Angeles. "At that time the benefits of yoga for me as a care-giver soon became clear. I found peace, acceptance and strength," she says. When she returned to Calgary last November, she knew she needed to continue integrating yoga into her life. "The Yoga Studio's choice of classes at four locations suited my unpredictable schedule perfectly," she says.

"As a professional musician I have had a lot of body-awareness training; it is a critical part of learning to play an instrument with efficiency and ease. I am trying to take yoga from the mat to the bench to the stage."
"However, with a family pre-disposition towards arthritis and 35 years on a piano bench, I have a very cranky sacro-iliac joint. At its worst, I experience a lot of rigidity on the right side and muscle spasms over the joint.

"Yoga, and especially Iyengar Yoga, is gradually decreasing the discomfort to the extent that I have cancelled cortisone injections. I am trying to attend 4 classes a week.
"I am thankful to the wonderful teaching staff at the Yoga Studio for their insights, guidance and good advice in each and every class," she says.
Congratulations Julie on your commitment to recovery!

Teacher of the Month
Genevieve Levesque

Teacher of the Month Genevieve Levesque loves sharing knowledge with others, particularly the experience of peace and contentment that comes after doing yoga.

"I live for that sensation that you get after a vigorous practice, while laying in Savasana (Corpse Pose), and I hope that everyone can experience this during their life time," she says.genevieve levesque

Gen, who is a popular Power Yoga teacher at the Calgary JCC studio, encourages her students to watch their breath and move with it, to, "find a rhythm and a practice that resonates. Most importantly, to be authentic."

Gen was lucky to have a father who did yoga so she was first exposed to the practice when she went with her dad to her first class at age 15.

Where is she going now with it all?
"I'm just riding the wave right now, seeing where it takes me and wow, this wave has been beautiful so far! Always up for learning different styles and techniques - the pool of knowledge is so so deep!"

Congratulations Genevieve on your passion and commitment!

We Lost Weight Through Iyengar Yoga

Does Iyengar Yoga help you lose weight?
This is a question we often get asked. Our answer is a resounding, "Yes!"
Check out these testimonials from students who couldn't wait to tell us about their success:

Janice: "I began practicing yoga about two years ago during a very contested divorce and the serious lower back flare up that it triggered. The specialist told me to do physiotherapy.  I decided on yoga instead. Since then I have lost 45 pounds and my lower back issues have faded into a dim memory in comparison with the emotional balance and physical well being I have been given through the gift of yoga at the JCC."

Lindae: I've been practicing yoga for a year now at the Yoga Studio. It has been a gradual progression, but I'm 16 pounds lighter. Yoga has taught me to think about what I'm eating. It makes me want to take better care of my body and I'm feeling the benefits of eating good food - more energy and less weight.

This is why we are running a workshop on weight loss in January. In the meantime any Iyengar or Power Yoga practice will help.
