Greetings!
Congratulations to all of you who participated in the Spring Into A New You Yoga Challenge. It was a great success and helped support a number of people in transforming their yoga practice into a lifestyle change. One student, Julie, wrote to me about the Challenge: "Every class is different, yet the same principles are always at work. I am enjoying meeting/working with new teachers and, as a team, they continue to astound me with their insights and skill. I learn so much from each and every one of them."That kind of feedback makes the whole thing worthwhile! Now, as of June 22, we are into the 11-week Summer Sizzler, and this is the perfect moment to continue coming to lots of classes at all four studios for a cost of less than one drop-in class a week. Please keep sending me your yoga stories and if you enjoy this newsletter do forward it to a friend.Have a great summer,Namaste,

Student of the Month
|
Andie Lorenz
This month's student of the month, Andie Lorenz, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2005 - only two months after bringing home her seven-month-old adopted daughter Margarita from Ethiopia. "Cancer sent me hurtling on a journey full of peaks and valleys, but one thing has remained consistent in my life: yoga," Andie says. "Even if I can do only a few poses on a given day, the practice always increases my feeling of wellbeing. Increasingly, oncologists are encouraging yoga and meditation." Andie's mother inspired her to take up yoga. When she was eight years old they lived in Isfahan, Iran and Andie watched her mom practice poses she had learned at the yoga class taught by a French expat. During her twenties and thirties she practiced from a book because it helped alleviate her back pain. It was not until ten years ago that she decided to try out the Yoga Studio. "I have always found the Yoga Studio a supportive place to be even during the times when I have lost my hair or my body image has changed and I have felt loathe to appear elsewhere," she says. "After a class I always feel energized. I also find that with practice one's ability to perform a pose improves noticeably, and there is a lot of satisfaction in that. "I suspect that I am not the only cancer patient practicing at the Yoga Studio. I also suspect that for all of us, yoga not only buoys our spirits but will prolong our lives." Congratulations Andie. |
Pose of the Month
|
Extended Hand to Big Toe Pose
Yoga students, particularly from other styles of yoga often question the use of props, wondering if they really add something to their practice - or just slow it down. BKS Iyengar's genius was in seeing that props make a huge difference in enabling stiffer students to do poses with correct alignment, avoiding injury and reaping maximum benefit from the asana.
In this pose, Uttitha Hasta Padangustasana, Kelly's shoulders in the first version are rounded to reach the foot, and his legs are bent to maintain his balance and to reach his foot with his hand. Using a strap in the second picture, Kelly's whole posture has changed for the better. The strap enables him to compensate for tight hamstrings, catching his foot with his spine and legs straight. He is benefiting from better posture and balance, and lengthening his hamstrings at the same time. Makes sense doesn't it?

Teachers of the Month
|
Sharoni Fixler and Michele Gunderson
Congratulations Michele Gunderson and Sharoni Fixler, who recently passed the tough international certification in Iyengar Yoga at an assessment in Winnipeg. They now join the growing number of Yoga Studio teachers with this advanced level of training, including Rob Walker, Valery Petrich, Sandy Martino, Trish Robbins, Sonja Evans, Skjei Sharma and Gaylene Fisher. Sharoni, who is in Calgary subbing classes for the summer, will be back on the regular schedule when she returns next year from a stay in Shanghai, China.
