SPRING INTO A NEW YOU YOGA CHALLENGE - A GREAT SUCCESS!

Our Spring Into a New You Yoga Challenge is half over and is proving a great success. At Yoga Studio South we have more than 50 students signed up to complete 33 classes between May 4 and June 21. (At Yoga Studio North there are more too.) A few are hardly out of the starting gate but most are well on their way to the finish line  - and one student, Patricia Kingsep, has already completed her 33 classes with a total of 37 so far. For those of you who remember Patricia as Student of the Month last year, she has also run 37 marathons! Patricia is heading in for surgery on her foot soon and wanted to be entered for the draw before she dropped out of the race. Good luck with your surgery Patricia and we look forward to your coming back to join us again on your recovery!
For the rest of you I am interested to hear your Challenge stories. How has it been for you? Has it been transforming?

Patricia Kingsep, already way ahead in the Yoga Challenge, coming in 3rd  in her age category at the 2008 Berlin Marathon (35,700 finishers).  More recently, she placed 1st in her age group at the 2009 Houston Marathon.

Greetings!

Help Us Save Paper and Serve You Better

Everyone working at The Yoga Studios is excited about a new environmentally-friendly studio management program which is coming to our four locations this month!
  • For you it means speedier signing in when you come to class and a shorter wait.
  • For us it means using less paper and more accurate record keeping.
Over the next month or so everyone will get their own personalized key key tagtag with bar code on it, which you will scan each time you come to class.

You will  also  be asked once only to sign a permanent waiver, which will be kept on file.
It is going to be a transitional time for us as we get more familiar with a program being used successfully in many yoga centres around the world.

So we ask for your patience with us as all the staff get up to speed.

Warmly

STUDENTS OF THE MONTH WITH NEW GRANDSON
Brian and Sheila
SHEILA ROBINSON AND BRIAN UNGER

30 Years in Yoga Together and now a First Grandchild!

This month's students of the month are Sheila Robinson and Brian Unger, who are celebrating meeting  in a yoga class exactly 30 years ago last month!

They are also celebrating thegrandchildir first grandchild, Isaac born to daughter Naomi May 16.

Sheila took up yoga for relaxation in 1974 after hearing about it from a friend. They took classes from one of Calgary's first yoga teachers Shirley Johannesen, when there were only about three or four yoga teachers in Calgary, renting space at the YWCA.

"I was hooked immediately - I was fascinated by the poses, and enjoyed the body awareness that I gained. This was prior to the Iyengar Yoga revolution in Alberta. I saw Iyengar Yoga as a natural progression, with deeper awareness in poses, and the strength-giving element."

Yoga has been an integral part of her life, helping her with focus and mindfulness, and awareness of issues in body and mind, such as insomnia. "I often do an hour session of "calming" poses which helps me to get back to sleep in the middle of the night," she says.

As a couple, Brian and Sheila find yoga a benefit for their  relationship. "When our lives have been very busy, attending classes together is a wonderful shared time-out to relax and regroup.

Her advice for others? "Stick with it and enjoy the journey of awareness of mind and body.   Going to classes supports practice, no matter how long you have been doing yoga.  I also enjoy changing teachers periodically and taking advantage of the occasional workshop."

His advice: "Enjoy becoming aware of your body's structure and natural processes; avoid competing with others or yourself."

Her last word? "It has been great to come back to the Yoga Studio community after four years away from Canada. Brian and I don't know many people there yet, but we certainly feel welcome"

Pose of the Month
Jatara Parivartanasana: A Great Supine Twist for Golfers and Anyone!

Jatara with Kelly
The pose illustrated by Kelly Cooper is a wonderful modification of a popular supine twist, where the knees are brought up to the chest (or the legs kept straight) and taken from side to side, while the arms are kept extended at shoulder height. In today's modification taught by BKS Iyengar's son Prashant, the legs are not swung from side to side. Instead they  have a yoga strap looped around both feet allowing for an intensive restorative twist. The strap holds the legs in place and goes under the base of the skull - not the neck. The strap is held with the outstretched left hand. The right hand holds the loop by the feet. Keep the left shoulder moving down and the legs together and perfectly straight. Do on the other side by bending the legs and rolling to the left and then straightening them again.
