YOGA FOR STRENGTHENING IMMUNITY
Yoga Helps Repel SicknessThere seem to have been a lot of colds, flu and other flu-like illnesses around this year.So it is reassuring to reflect how wonderful yoga is for building and restoring the immune system - particularly the very therapeutic Iyengar asana and pranayama (breathing) practices. Check out this link or this link for more information on yoga and immunity. Or pick up a copy of Yoga: The Path to Holistic Health by BKS Iyengar.

Teacher of the Month
Congratulations Lynne Swenson!
Teacher of the month Lynne Swenson, who enthusiastically teaches a 5 pm class on Sunday evenings at Wellington Square, took her first yoga class about 14 years ago at the same Wellington Square - and only because her older brother bought her a drop-in pass and told her that yoga could "add something" to her normal routine of running and going to the gym. At first it was just a "lovely stretch" after a run. "But as I continued to practice I soon realized that yoga wasn't just about stretching and flexibility, but also about strength and stability. I became more aware of what my body was telling me when working out at the gym, or running, and I was sleeping better," she said. In 2006 she signed up for the Yoga Studio College of Canada Teacher Training program, and has been "hooked" ever since, she says. "Yoga has helped to provide me with a sense of well being during the ups and downs of daily life, as well as during more difficult times such as the loss of a loved one, and a major career change." Lynne's advice to students is the same as she was given by her own teachers: "Just go to your mat - even if your mind is telling you not to - even if it's only for a few minutes each day - and slowly this routine will truly become a practice". |
A Sad Departure . . . .
Annette Romuld leaving. . .
Annette Romuld has been a key figure at Yoga Studio South for six years, personifying restorative and better back yoga at Wellington Square and the Calgary JCC. Now she is sadly leaving for her new home in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island in late June or early July and teaches her last class on June 20. Is she retiring, I asked her. "Retirement. . .don't know, but definitely taking the summer off," she says coyly! "Going to let the universe unfold as it should." Annette is as sad about leaving as we are at seeing her go. "I would like to say thank you to all the wonderful students who have been coming to my classes. . . some from when I first started teaching, some who helped get classes started. I am honoured to have been able to share the benefits of restorative and better back yoga with them and watch their progress. I will miss the people who have come to the classes and everyone connected with the Yoga Studio." They will miss her too! But thankfully we may not have seen the last of Annette. She plans on dropping in to the studio when she is in town. Annette is being replaced at Wellington Square with Janet MacAllan, who has been intensively studying with Annette for some time. At the JCC, her class will be taken over by Sherryn Rault and Emily Valdes.

Iyengar Yoga Teacher Given National Award
Father Joe Peirera Honored
Senior Iyengar Yoga teacher and Roman Catholic Priest Father Joe H Pereira received the Padma Shree award from The President of India on the 14th of April this year. Most of us in Calgary know Father Joe for his regular trips to Calgary to teach workshops for which he has a large and loyal following. At home he runs the Kripa Foundation, which treats alcohol and chemical addictions and HIV/AIDS with a combination of techniques, including yoga, at more than 40 centres in 11 Indian cities. It is one of the largest charitable organizations in India. He was a close friend of the late Mother Teresa. Padma Shri is given by the Government of India to Indian citizens to recognize their distinguished contribution in various spheres of activity including the Arts, Education, Industry, Literature, Science, Sports, Social Service and public life. The word padma in Sanskrit means lotus and shri is a respectful title.
