Sadly Leaving . . .
|
Maria GalenzaThe Taoist philosopher said the only thing we can be certain of is change - and coming to terms with that can sometimes bring sadness. One of my longest serving teachers Maria Galenza will be leaving in April. to pursue other things. And Gaylene Fisher will be taking some time off from teaching at Wellington Square, starting in May. We'll miss them both and wish them well. Rob Nichols will no longer be teaching the Wednesday morning 9.15 am class at the JCC, although he'll still be here Mondays. On the plus side, I am happy to introduce you to Genevieve Levesque, who will be taking over Rob's Wednesday class at the JCC and Melissa Cloutier, who relaces Gaylene in May at Wellington Square on Sundays. You are probably familiar with Gwen Ritch, who teaches Power Pilates on Sunday and takes over Maria's Level One class next Sunday. Trish Robbins will take over Gaylene's Monday 5.45 pm Level One With Breath Awareness in May and Kristel, who is teaching Yoga for Pregnancy on Mondays will teach a Fusion class at 7.30 pm that evening starting in May. |

TEACHER OF THE MONTH - EMILY VALDEZ
|
 |
The first thing you notice about yoga teacher Emily Valdez is the quality of serenity and caring she brings to her classes. "I love coming into a space where people are gathered to practice and sending love and compassion towards them" she says. "I like sharing what I've learned because it helps me be both a better student and teacher; witnessing over time the transformation in a student's body and mind. This reinforces my belief in the profound benefits of yoga practice. Her philosophy is to provide a safe space where students can feel at ease. "Through patience and love, I hope to help guide students to a place where they can see that the real teacher resides within themselves." Emily started yoga in 2003, and teaching in 2006. Mainly focusing on Ashtanga yoga, she is also moving towards teaching therapeutic/restorative yoga. She will be sharing with Sherryn Rault the Restorative/Better Back class at the Calgary JCC Yoga Studio in the summer. Congratulation Emily on being Teacher of the Month in April! Student of the Month - April
|
Liza Hunter
Even though circus aerialist Liza Hunter came to yoga from a very different background to most of us, she got into it the same way many people do; through an accident - on a trapeze.
"After the accident, and my finding physical therapy wasn't giving me my mobility back, I began taking yoga classes in my hometown in Michigan, which happened to be Iyengar yoga," she says. "After a couple of classes, I could feel the difference in my spine, which had been sprained in two places by my accident. Within a month, I was back to my normal range of motion and after two months, I was even more flexible and able to go back to work in the air."
At first she did yoga to work out and to become more flexible, but it became much more than that. The philosophy has slowly been creeping into her life on many different levels beyond the mat. "I see myself gaining strength and flexibility physically through the asana practice, but the overall yoga practice is what I'm truly benefiting from. Yoga also helps me to live in the now, and because of that, I'm much happier," says Liza, who is in the Yoga Studio College of Canada Teacher Training Program.
Her last word? "I feel so blessed to have come to Calgary and found the Yoga Studio. Everything about it is full of light; the teachers, the staff, and the students. A year ago, I would never have guessed I'd be here, but I couldn't be more fortunate. I feel much gratitude for everyone there and everything they are giving, it made my move to Canada much easier!" Congratulations Liza.

Pose of the month
|
Revolving Half Moon
Revolving Half Moon is a hard pose for most people to do since it requires flexibility, strength and balance. Props - in this case a wall - allow you to do challenging poses with confidence and hold the pose long enough to refine your alignment. Warm up well first with simpler poses. Start facing the wall two inches away, with your legs wide apart. Turn your left leg out to 90 degrees and your back foot in steeply. Rotate your hips in the direction of your left foot. Bring the right hand down onto a block and revolve the torso towards the centre of the room. Bend the front knee and raise the back leg to horizontal. Keep both legs very straight and press your left shoulder and hip into the wall for balance and rotation. Hold as you rotate and extend more.Do the other side.
