TEACHER OF THE MONTH -
TRACY SCOTT
Tracy Scott
Whoever I was considering for teacher of the month for October, Tracy's Thursday morning students were determined it was going to be her - and what a good choice that was!
Tracy's combination of detail, innovation and passion consistently fills her classes on Thursday mornings at Wellington Square.
Regular student Kate Morriset sums it up: "Tracy is an innovative teacher, always bringing new insight to class based on her own yoga practice and spiritual journey.
"I am always amazed about how much yoga she fits into a class!  She is very good at crafting a class which is always new, challenging, informative and joyous," Morriset says. " Tracy's sense of humour and inquisitive mind makes her class my favourite."
Tracy herself says: "I teach a holistic, well-rounded class, providing attention to detail. I care for my students and invite them to work hard, encourage them to listen and trust. I want them to learn to feel and have fun doing it!"
Congratulation for all you do Tracy!

STUDENT OF THE MONTH - PATRICIA KINGSEP
Patricia Kingsep
I am delighted to announce Patrcia Kingsep as October student of the month.
Patricia came every day during the July Empower Your Best 31-day Yoga Challenge and caught the eye of teacher Natalie Monson, who nominated her as student of the month. "She came almost every single day throughout the summer sizzler and is an incredibly keen student," said Natalie.

"Hooked On Yoga"

"In 2007, I decided to try yoga to gain more flexibility to prevent injuries from running," Patricia said."I enjoyed and benefitted from The Yoga Studio Summer Sizzler - so why not another Sizzler program in 2008.  I soon discovered that I had much to relearn.  Yoga is a continuing process," she said.
 "Interestingly, I found that I had to approach this summer with a different mind-set which the yoga teachers refer to as being mindful.  I gave more time to my state of mind and spirit along with the body fitness component of the practice.  This was hard work for me.  As the summer progressed, I found myself slowing down, being present in the moment and paying more attention to the postures.  A 90 minute session became timeless.
"I have incorporated this awareness into my daily life and current marathon training.  The increased flexibility gained by regular yoga practice has continued to keep me injury free."

Issue: #4 October/2008

Greetings!

For me, Yoga has been a journey of study and practice aiming at self-awareness. To enhance this journey, I have been taking classes in Conscious Communication this year with my wife Judy. The classes in Calgary with Barbara Wiebe, are based on the work of Dr. Marshall Rosenberg's NVC. It asks us to transcend 10,000 years of conditioning, where most of our communication has been around defence and control, blame and praise. NVC is about empathy and connection and is radically different to anything I grew up with!
The experience of these workshops is giving us new tools to make practical the vision of living in harmony in all daily interactions.
It is extremely challenging to learn new tricks for an old dog like me but it's worth it. Rosenberg has successfully brought African tribes with generations of hatred for each other to agreement at the table; and I have seen on video, after a 20-minute intervention by Rosenberg, a woman admit her husband was listening to her for the first time in 37 years.
I am skeptical that any one thing will help the world be a better place. But, in my opinion, NVC certainly ranks up there with reducing global warming and similar initiatives. For more information on NVC click here; or to find out about Barbara's program click here.
How am I doing with it? I reckon I'm still working through the first 5,000 years of conditioning! rob - head shot

ARE YOU READY?
'EMPOWER YOUR BEST' 28-DAY FALL YOGA CHALLENGE STARTS WEDNESDAY!

generic shot for ttpEnter to win a 6 month unlimited pass - and get in great shape!

Our first Empower Your Best Yoga Challenge was such a success we are bringing it back again in October with some slight changes.
Doing yoga on a regular daily basis is the finest way to stay well physically, mentally and spiritually. Many of us know that - in theory at least!
Easily said, but how do we get motivated to make yoga a part of our daily life?
Coming to class can be so hard when staying in bed seems so inviting. . . or we may feel pulled to stay at work rather than hitting the yoga mat.
My answer is to invite you to take part in a fun and inspiring event - the second 28 Day Yoga Challenge at Wellington Square and the Calgary JCC.
You commit to coming to yoga four - yes four this time! - out of every seven days for the first 28 days of October. Complete that and you will feel amazingly energized, stronger and healthier. And your name gets entered for a draw to win a six month unlimited pass worth $625.
There's no better time to take this challenge than now all the classes are drop-in. This is about making yoga a part of your daily life, achieving balance and gaining vitality. It is also about being a part of the Yoga Studio South community of yogis.

How do I enter?
Sign up at the front desk for free. We enter your name on the Yoga Challenge board. Every time you come to class you put a star by your name. It couldn't be easier could it?

How Many Times A Week Should I Come To Yoga?
Foster
Three times or more. . .
How many times a week should I come to yoga is one of the commonest questions we hear at Yoga Studio South. The answer is that you should come as often as possible - but that may not always be practical. If you come once a week you will see progress, but change will come faster and be deeper if you come three or four times a week. That is why we recently made a major switch to an all drop-in schedule: so you could fit more classes into your busy schedules and make yoga an integral part of your lives. Krounchasana: The Heron
Many of us, living close to the Bow River, have seen a Blue Heron once in a while, sitting still as a rock, in shallow water waiting for an unsuspecting fish to catch with lightening speed. This image inspired the early yogis to name the pose below as Krounchasana, or The Heron. It is an intermediate pose requiring quite a lot of flexibility in the quads and hamstrings. But as you can see from the modification on the right being done by yoga teacher Kelly Cooper, the pose can be made accessible with props. He is sitting on a bFosterlanket to keep his hips level.   His     back  is supported by a pillar and his leg is resting on the seat of a chair.

MEN AND YOGA

Why People Don't Do Yoga
The commonest reason why people don't sign up for yoga classes, according to an expert I consult, and from my own experience, is because they say: "I am too inflexible." And this may be part of the reason why some classes have more women than men. Men simply feel too far behind in the flexibility stakes to show themselves in a yoga class. We understand this and that is why we have a class for men only, taught by Peter Cary, (right) a Calgary geophysicist and certified yoga instructor. It is on Wednesdays at 7.50 pm at the JCC. Yoga for men:
    * improves flexibility
    * makes you stronger
    * relieves back pain
    * charges up your sex life
    * and even improves your golf game
