ESSENTIAL PROPS: GETTING STARTED
|
|
What props do I need to bring? is a common question new students ask our staff when they sign up for classes. The answer is, 'just your mat - for hygiene reasons.' But, to get the full benefits of yoga, you need to practice at home and then you want a set of the basic props, including a mat, bolster, two blankets, a strap and a couple of blocks. You can obtain all those at the Yoga Studios with a discount for buying more than five items.

. . . .AND TALKING OF TEACHER TRAINING
|
|
Some of your teachers are continually upgrading their skills with additional training, which is why they are the best! Here is Isabel Oliveira with North America's top Iyengar teacher, Patricia Walden, in June in Rapolano Terme, Tuscany, Italy. Congratulations Isabel on all your professional upgrading. Other teachers who took additional out-of-town training over the summer that I know about include Rob Nicholls, and Peter Cary

Where is Sharoni now?

Loving Every Minute of Life in Shanghai
Sadly Sharoni stopped teaching for the Yoga Studio South in August. But now she is right in the middle of a new adventure - living in Shanghai, China, for two years while her partner, Chris, goes to university there. "It's our second week here and we're having a lovely time so far" Sharoni writes. "The streets around our apartment are friendly and clean (especially by Shanghai standards), full of big trees and an eclectic mix of boutiques, restaurants, vendors, small shops and larger office buildings. We live in a small studio apartment with a great layout that's both functional and comfortable. We're on the 16th floor which offers a view of the endless skyscrapers that are Shanghai's trademark." We miss you and wish you a great time.

Student and Teacher of the Month
|
Evonne Smulders and Victoria Noble
Calgary JCC yoga student Evonne Smulders is heading off to the Maui Marathon with 10 other southern Alberta friends September 14. But she's the only one who has not experienced any injuries on the grueling path of training for the 26-mile event. She puts that down to Iyengar-style yoga, and more specifically to her Thursday morning class with Victoria Noble at the Calgary JCC. "There are so many aspects I like about the class," she says. "I come because there are things for me to work on, and Victoria always seems to know what they are."
Evonne highly recommends The Runners' Yoga Book, not only for runners but for anyone who is active. The book deals with all the key parts of the body and how to make them more flexible and strong, she explains. (You can pick up this book at The Yoga Studio South.)
She earns the spot of student of the month for her dedication to, and appreciation for yoga. Good luck Evonne in the Maui Marathon from all your friends at the Yoga Studio South!
Victoria Noble makes teacher of the month as one of the most popular teachers, not only with the students, but with studio administration! She is known for her caring, detailed approach to teaching and to the whole experience in and out of the classroom for students coming to the JCC. "I was given the wonderful opportunity to begin teaching at the south studio before I had completed the Teacher Training program several years ago," Victoria says. "I teach with sensitivity and humor. I put great focus on moving with the breath and honoring your body. I spent 4 years volunteering with the MS Society in the MS Yoga program where I developed my sensitivity to individual needs and my belief that yoga is for everybody!"

Pose of the month - Salamba Sarvangasana

Without support With blankets for support
Supported Shoulderstand
When Brenda Smith came to my class she told me she didn't need blankets to do shoulderstand - or Salamba Sarvangasana. Although some people have the range of motion in their necks to do this, it is rare and I was skeptical. I let her go up without blankets and then asked her to do it again with four blankets folded under the shoulders. When I showed her the difference in the photographs she was shocked at what she had been doing in the past and how much better her alignment was in the second photo. Brenda was also good humored enough to let me use the photographs in the newsletter for everybody's education.I have found that with up to 7 blankets some of my students with neck issues are able to go into shoulderstand safely.

the yoga tradition of self-attention and inner harmony. Foster will
show you how to develop regular meditation time, and bring meditation
to daily activities and relationships. Connect with yoga poses and
