MAJOR CHANGES AT ALL FOUR YOGA STUDIOS All Drop-In Classes Starting September
 |
Great news for everyone coming to any of the four Yoga Studios in town.
As of Monday September 8 we will be switching to an All Drop-In Schedule and
encourage you to continue the Summer Sizzler habit of coming three or four
times a week. This new schedule means: >
A wider selection of classes to choose from
>
The convenience of making a last minute decision
to attend class
>
Greater flexibility when scheduling travel and
work
>
Ease in finding the teachers you like to work
with
>
New early morning classes 3 times a week
If
you were going to a regular registered class before you can still go to the
same class and maybe try some other classes as well! PS There are still a few registered classes for those who want the structured progression!

Student and Teacher of the Month
|
 |
Kathy Cline and Sharoni Fixler
August's student of the month Kathy
Cline took up yoga at the JCC one and a half years ago after a car accident
a few years prior. She is a great believer in the health care system, which she
works for. "But sometimes we need to get proactive," she says. "This has worked for me. It has been
absolutely amazing. It helped me to get off medication." Sharoni Fixler is her favorite teacher although she has not had a
disappointing experience at the JCC, she says. Sharoni says of Kathy:
"Her quiet dedication and warm smile is always an inspir- ation. Her
practice is a beautiful balance between softness and keen effort. I will
really miss seeing her every week."
Teacher of the month is Sharoni
Fixler, who originally trained as a Power Yoga teacher but is now a firm
proponent of Iyengar Yoga and will be traveling to India sometime soon to study further with the Iyengar family. She challenges the very demanding Iyengar
Yoga international teaching certificate in June next year. "The teachers who have impacted me most are those who have a deep,
committed practice and who embody the principles of yoga," Sharoni says.
"They teach with awareness, intelligence and intuition. These teachers
offer their students a glimpse of how, through the body, one can penetrate the
mind and move toward the soul."
Sharoni's Continuing Journey

Sadly
she will be leaving the Yoga Studio South in this month to travel to China for two
years with her partner Chris. No, the Olympics don't include yoga. But that may
change . . .

SUMMER CRAZINESS
|
 |
Yoga studio regular student Dave Bertram 'canyoning' (rappelling down waterfalls,
sliding down natural slides, jumping - sometimes backwards - into pools, etc.)
in the Dolomites near Lake Garda, Italy - a sport "that requires a good deal of faith in
the advice of the guides, and a willingness to accept the odd bump and scrape,"
says Dave, who went with his family this summer. "The splash was fairly
impressive!" YOGIC FLYING!?

Rob shows an unconventional use of the Iyengar ropes in an 'off the wall moment!'

My Big News
|
Judy and I get married this month!
It's an exciting time for me! The next time you
receive this monthly email newsletter I will be married to Judy Nelson, who I
met through a mutual friend in 2006 and who is now a frequent student at the
South Studios (She was in the Empower Your Best 31-Day Challenge that just finished). She may be better known to those who come to Wellington Square
on Saturdays as 'The Muffin Lady,' because of the plate of muffins she often
brings. We are happy to be having a small family wedding outdoors August 10. Keep
your fingers crossed for fine weather that afternoon.

Empower Your Best 31-Day Challenge
|
Caroline receives 6-mo. pass
A Great Success
Speaking of excitement, I hope those of you who
entered The 31 Day Empower Your Best Yoga Challenge all had a great time. It was
heartwarming and encouraging to see so many faces reappearing with enthusiasm
day after day at the two studios for the first challenge that we have offered. It was a huge success, entered by 43 students and completed by 16. The six-month
unlimited passes were won by Caroline Russel-King at the JCC and Amanda Stock at Wellington Square.
Congratulation to them and to all those who participated. We will have another 28-day
challenge from September 15 to October 12. Hopefully there will not be many
people going on vacation then!

Cleansing at Wellington Square
|
Panditji brings new energy to the studio
Pandit Dabral, PhD, learned
teacher from the Himalayan Tradition, visited the Yoga Studios to cleanse them
of any negative influences. This blessing, or Puja, involved invoking the
support of Ganesh, the enabler, and Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, to bring
good fortune to the studio and those who visit here. I am thankful for his
generosity and wisdom.

Pose of the Month
|
Trikonasana on a Tressler
This month's pose is not so much about an asana as about the prop against which it is performed. This piece of equipment at Wellington Square is called a tressler, or 'Pune Pony' after the city where its inventor, B K S Iyengar lives. The tressler, or wooden horse, has also been called the "Cadillac of yoga props." It is used for:
> Extra support for standing poses during menstruation, pregnancy or fatigue > Back care > Hip care, MS and other therapeutics > Chest openers including for heart patients > Alignment of the spine, i.e.: for scoliosis Please try it!
