Unemployment Rates Drop for Austin, the State

Austin and Texas' unemployment rates fell in November, the Texas Workforce Commission reported Friday. The unemployment rate in Austin fell to 6.6 percent last month, down from 7.1 percent in October. The Texas unemployment rate dropped to 8.1 percent, down from 8.4 percent in October. Texas added 20,800 nonfarm jobs in November for a total of 226,000 jobs added over the year. The national unemployment rate fell to 8.6 percent, the lowest level since March 2009.

 

Downtown Austin Post Office Sold

The United States Postal Service has sold its post office in downtown Austin. Austin development firm Andrews Urban LLC and Atlanta-based Novare Group purchased the property  in a joint venture. A purchase price has not been disclosed.

 

A very large building or high-rise is almost certain to be built on the downtown post office site -- located at 510 Guadalupe St. -- as plans have ranged from a hotel to a high-rise condo. The sale of the block at Guadalupe and West Sixth streets will close in mid or late 2012, Taylor Andrews, president of Andrews Urban said.

 

Austin: State's Hottest Spot for Startups

CENTRAL TEXAS - Investors poured $280 million into Central Texas startup companies in third quarter 2011, making the area the state's hottest spot for early stage deals.

In total, Texas startups raised $517.6 million, according to a report released by the statewide organization Texas Entrepreneur Networks.

 

"This is more proof Austin is the place for entrepreneurs to be if they want to raise money," said Hall Martin, executive director of the Texas Entrepreneur Networks, which fosters startups.

Population

Because of its draw as a destination for migrating talent, metro Austin's population grew to over 1.7 million in 2010. The 1990s saw a 48% increase in population, and growth has been averaging 3.2% annually since the 2000 Census. Census Bureau estimates for 2000 to 2009 show that Austin remains one of the top destinations for migrating talent. Austin ranks third among the top 50 U.S. metros based on net migration as a percent of total population (18%).

Bragging Rights: Four Texas Cities Make Emerging Trends List of Top 20 Investment, Development Prospects
