Veteran-owned businesses can take advantage of free consulting
 
No-cost, confidential, one-on-one professional business counseling from the Arkansas Small Business and Technology Development Center is available for any Arkansas veteran who is a current or prospective small business owner. Entrepreneurs are paired up with a business consultant from the nearest ASBTDC office. Offices are located in Arkadelphia, Fayetteville, Jonesboro, Little Rock, Magnolia, McGehee and Russellville.

'Carry the Flame' coming to Little Rock's MacArthur Museum May 25 
 
"Carry the Flame Across America," a group of motorcyclists that rides to raise awareness about children whose parents are deployed military personnel, will roll into Little Rock at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 25. Carry the Flame's annual trek across the country concludes in Washington D.C. on Memorial Day. The group's Little Rock stop will be at MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History, 503 E. Ninth St. Big Brothers/Big Sisters of the Black Hills will benefit this year from money raised on the annual journey.

The event is open to the public. Anyone wishing to ride into Little Rock with Carry the Flame can join the group at Toad Suck Harley Davidson in Conway at 8:30 a.m. on May 25.

Conference on Korean War is Saturday
 
The Butler Center for Arkansas Studies will host a one-day conference on the Korean War Saturday. "Arkansas in the Forgotten War: The Korean War Remembered" will focus on the role Arkansans played in the conflict and will premiere a documentary featuring extensive interviews with Arkansas Korean War veterans and original archival footage. Speakers will include Dr. James I. Matay of California State University-Chico, Dr. Roger Pauly of the University of Central Arkansas and Steve Rucker, director of the Arkansas National Guard Museum.

Beebe to speak at Memorial Day ceremony
 
The Arkansas Department of Veterans Affairs will present a Memorial Day ceremony Monday, May 31, at 10 a.m. at the Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery, 1501 W. Maryland Ave., in North Little Rock. 
 
Governor Mike Beebe
will give the keynote address. Gene McVay, commander of the American Legion Department of Arkansas, will emcee.
 
Public parking will be available at Woody's Sherwood Forest on Maryland
Avenue and possible overflow parking will be at the Wal-Mart on Hwy. 107. Handicapped parking will be available at Pulaski Technical College Aerospace Technology Center across from the cemetery. Buses and vans will begin transporting individuals to the cemetery at 9 a.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring umbrellas, rain or shine. Water will be provided.

Memorial Day observance at the Fayetteville National Cemetery is at 10 a.m. on May 31. Call 479.444.5051 for details. Fort Smith National Cemetery will hold its Memorial Day ceremony on Sunday, May 30, at 2 p.m. Due to limited parking at the cemetery, shuttles will run from the convention center. SBA honors Lee and Lawrence
 
Timothy Lee and Herb Lawrence were jointly named Veterans Small Business Champion of the Year at the 20th Annual Arkansas Small Business Awards Luncheon April 27 in Little Rock. The award was presented by Linda Nelson of the Arkansas District of the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Lee is webmaster and training specialist for the Arkansas Small Business and Technology Development Center at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock College of Business. Lawrence is the center director of the ASBTDC regional office at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. Both are U.S. military veterans. Lee served 18 years on active duty in the Air Force. Lawrence spent seven years on active duty in the Army Signal Corp and served 13 years with the Arkansas National Guard. 

The pair led ASBTDC's 2009 veterans project aimed at active, retired and reserve military personnel who are small business owners or aspiring entrepreneurs.
