Fact: Take-out sales for full-service restaurants are on the rise. However, the average check is lower than for dine-in customers. (First Research)
Many commercial lenders don't get excited about the prospect of a new restaurant loan. Talk with any commercial lender and he or she is likely to have at least one story about an entrepreneur who borrowed money to open a restaurant which subsequently went out of business and defaulted on a loan.
Under the right circumstances, though, a restaurant can be quite successful, and the business owner can be a good customer. Market research can help restauranteurs make sound decisions. When you are working on a potentially viable restaurant loan, refer your customer to the Arkansas Small Business and Technology Development Center for industry information as well as demographics and GIS mapping. This information is particularly helpful for successful restaurant owners seeking to open another location.
Here's a sampling of the kind of research ASBTDC can supply:
- The average barbecue restaurant in the Little Rock-North Little Rock metropolitan statistical area had sales of approximately $243,000 in 2008. (Biz Miner)
- The restaurant industry is labor intensive with average revenue per worker of $40,000-$45,000. (First Research)
- The average cost of goods sold for a barbecue restaurant is 40.2%, and salaries and wages typically run around 17.5%. (Biz Miner)
If this is the type of information you would like to see as you evaluate potential restaurant deals, please refer your restaurant customers to the ASBTDC. We are eager to assist them with their recipe for success.

SBA Lender Training 2010: Meeting the Challenges of Small Business Financing in Today's Economy
Specialized training sessions just for lenders this month will focus on Recovery Act lending provisions, status, and changes since rollout last year. SBA will discuss ways to identify new lending opportunities, possibly within your own portfolio, and will share examples of actual loans made during the last year. Lenders will be invited to share ideas and best practices that can benefit all. Finally, SBA will review its electronic lending Web site and address servicing, liquidation, purchase, and Etran issues.
