The Shadow Review

AUGUST, 2011

Why Choose Shadow:

  • Development!
  • Competition!
  • Community!
  • Enjoyment!

Sean's Shadow Spiel

As we come upon the close of the Summer season and look forward to the Fall, we remain excited by the soccer opportunities that abound for our Shadow players.

Jamboree 1Development, Competition, Community and Enjoyment are our Four Pillars that hold us up in our pursuit to carry out our mission.  We have top coaches and top players that serve as the vital pieces to strengthen our club.  We play in the best leagues in the state, earning the right to do so.  All of this is fantastic.

However, our main priority will always be on developing players into better soccer players, and through the game of soccer, into better people.  One thing is for certain, you can only get better at something by doing it often and doing it well.  Practice does not make perfect, it makes permanent...or said a different way, perfect practice makes perfect.  There are so many wise sayings that abound out there regarding practice...one of which comes from Sir Alex Ferguson, "practice makes the player."  (For those basketball fans out there, we'll disregard what Allen Iverson has to say about practice!)

We encourage our players to attend other team training sessions.  There are soccer opportunities everywhere within our club.  Players that want to get better need only look to their club for the right opportunities.  We have seen great progress in the many players that do so.  We have witnessed great stories of players doing so just this summer.  Here's a couple of short examples: walking onto the Dwight Merkel fields, I see over 20 players U11-13 training at once, with girls mixed in with boys.  I loved it.  Again, we witnessed the efforts of one 11 year old boy, walking 45 minutes in one direction to attend a practice that was not his own.  Loved it!  Seeing players bike their way to extra practice sessions.  Love it!  Seeing college players mix in with our older players for sessions.  Love it!

What I also love about these stories is that the players haveJamboree 2 to own their soccer.  This experience needs to be their own.  Yes, as parents we need to serve as guides and encouragers (and taxi drivers and...) but as for the soccer itself, we need to leave it at that.  The soccer experience is theirs to keep.  Juergen Klinsmann, who has recently been named the US Men's National Team coach and who is generating a lot of excitement about soccer in our country due to his successful and vast experiences, reflected back on his youth soccer experience in a recent interview by Soccer America.
"I was very lucky to have worked with a lot of great coaches, but my biggest influence was always my Dad, who just let me play and enjoy the game as a little boy and gave me the chance to call it "my game"!"

Notice the important role of the parent, but also notice that the parent allowed it to be the child's game.  As adults, let us always remember this piece.  This should also lend itself to staying calmer on the sidelines and not so worked up about mistakes, referee errors, losses and the like.  We are there to enjoy our kids.  The kids are there to enjoy "their game."

I end with another Jurgen Klinsmann article that I think is very revealing for soccer development.  It is something that we have preached and encouraged throughout the past few years.  It is important to play and to play often.  It is also important to play in environments not solely controlled by adults.  Pick up soccer is vital to development.  All of the experts agree.  Pick up soccer is not as prevalent now for many reasons-urban development, safety, etc.; as such, we try to create that environment within our Shadow training sessions.  And we always, always encourage kids to play on their own.  For me, this is soccer; it is solely about playing for the love of the game.

In the Spirit of Soccer,

Sean Bushéy
Technical Director
Spokane Shadow Youth Soccer Club

Soccer Insider:  Sleep Well

By Dev K. Mishra, M.D.

I'm sure anyone who's raised an adolescent or teenager can attest to the idea that teenagers don't get as much sleep as they need.

For the adolescent or teenager a number of outside influences take place: more demands on time for homework, socializing, sports, music, or any number of other activities. Let's take a look below at some reasons why sleep patterns change, what the proper amount of sleep is, and how it can affect sports performance.  Read on
