Kind Feedback: Home Game Hospitality Appreciated
February, 2011
Lisa and Kevin,
I wanted to let you know how appreciative we are for everything you did for us this morning (the blankets, heaters, tent, bench, cocoa, coffee....). Never has a team gone so far out of their way to make us feel comfortable and welcome. While the conditions were not ideal, you made the situation 100 times better.
Our parents were very impressed and extremely thankful for what you did for us. Seriously, you went out of your way, and we REALLY REALLY appreciate it. On behalf of all of our parents and coaches, thank you!

On & Off the Field

Spokane Shadow Turf Kings Strike Again... ...competing in the U11 Gold Division of the Inland NW 5v5 tournament one week ago. All of the kids have been or currently are part of the Shadow U10 Junior Program.
The Turf Kingz played up one year against U11 teams from Spokane and north Idaho. The team scored 34 more goals than their opponents - which was one of the largest spreads of all the tournament brackets.

Sean's Shadow Spiel
We are born into this world dependant on someone else to survive, yet once we land on our two feet we strive to be independent (see the Terrible Twos); with that begins one of the themes of life-trying to make it on our own, while deep inside knowing that we need others to help us while on our life's journey. With this theme in mind, either consciously or subconsciously, we soon place our children in environments with other children to help them learn to "play" with others because we have discovered that our lives become much more difficult and less satisfying if we do not learn to work with and encourage others. We can look no further than our family structure to know that we need each other, and yet there are struggles. We want to be independent but are very much dependent; these antagonist energies pull against us all our lives. To help our children learn to cope with this challenge, we try to teach our children to be "sharers," and enroll them into activities that involve others - daycares, dancing, preschool, gymnastics...and soccer.
Team sports can be a great teacher of life's rewards and life's struggles. What is learned from being a part of a team? Of significance, in my opinion, is that we can accomplish more if we give up part of our own selfish ambitions. If we only strive to please ourselves, our experiences become very shallow and usually fall short of the team's potential (or in real life the community's, the school district's, the neighborhood's or the country's potential.) Michael Jordan never won a NBA title until Scottie Pippen and Horace Grant showed up; LeBron could not do it on his own in Cleveland. Barcelona had to sell Ibrahimovic and insert Villa to perform as they are now (Iniesta being healthy helps too, but that's a different topic!) I would think that as a parent, more than wins and losses, we want our child to learn that it is important to think of others first, to give up something of your own so that the group can become stronger, to work hard for your teammate always and to work with others towards a common goal. These are some of the greatest lessons in playing a team sport, I believe. They are tangible lessons that can translate over to the rest of our life if we are intentional about our teaching and our learning.
I preach many times to my Whitworth team the importance of being a "good" teammate. More than anything, this is what I want them to be (I also believe success will follow if this occurs.) As parents, I am sure we hope that our child would also carry and foster these "good" teammate attributes, and I do think that we have a plethora of good teammates within our club! Our kids are going to grow up to be good spouses, neighbors, employees, employers and community members. One of the hardest things to do is to give up yourself for the betterment of others; to sacrifice your own desires so that the greater group can forge a stronger and better path, yet to know that the group desperately depends on you to give your best if it is to succeed. Our players are learning this. As adults, I hope we are reminded (and perhaps taught along the way) as we watch our kids play, learn, struggle and succeed that we need to be good teammates also!
Enjoy your soccer, Sean Bushéy Technical Director Spokane Shadow Youth Soccer Club |

Shadow Board Election Results
Congratulations to newly elected Shadow board members Rebecca Templin and Theresa Helmbrecht. Becky and Theresa bring in depth fundraising experience and great visions for club sustainability. We thank everyone who volunteered to run and those who have actively served.
Leaving their posts are Katie Gantz and Ramon Farias. We thank Katie and Ramon for their work and support. Katie served two plus consecutive terms, with her last term after her daughter graduated from the club (currently playing at Seattle U). She gave a tremendous amount of herself for the betterment of the club, the whole club...even to the last hour in helping with recent high school boys tryouts in the freezing cold! Katie has set the prime example of what it means to think of the greater good rather than needs of the self.
The proposed amendment to our bylaws was also passed by the required majority.
Shadow is dependent upon members willing to share their vision for youth soccer by serving on the board. Those who did not have the opportunity to run for this current board election are encouraged to participate in our next election. Thank you for casting your ballots for your Club!

Shadow Wellness: Concussions
Sponsored by APEX Physical Therapy
Back in the day, when an athlete took a brutal hit to the head, the coach asked: Can you say your name? Are you conscious? Not throwing up? All good. Get back on the field already.
Today, the mantra is: When in doubt, sit them out.
Good thing. In the U.S., there are more than 1.6 million sport-related concussions every year. More than eight states have passed concussion-specific legislation to protect young athletes. Even the MLS has created a new Concussion Program Committee, chaired by a neuropsychologist, to help guide concussion management. Read full story

Indoor Turf Installed at Craven's!
Shadow's appreciation to Simon Thompson and Becky Templin, Shadow parents and owners of Cravens Coffee, for their ongoing donation of indoor practice space at their warehouse gym cannot be overstated. Recent upgrade of the playing surface to indoor turf was made possible due to their generosity, the work of Shadow parent Deb Ascher, and a group of installation volunteers. Thanks to her bargain shopping, Deb helped save the club tens of thousands of dollars - taking a $30,000 project down to under $13,000. Turf was laid in under three hours thanks to Matt Stueckle, Julio Morales, Brent Murakami, Simon Thompson, Bryan Olson, Cameron B ushey, Dion Coxe, Deb Ascher, Sean Bushey, and Niko Varlamos. We now have made a great practice environment even better. Our players are already playing on the surface and there is nothing but excitement as the club continues to improve in providing services to our members. We are always seeking ways to improve, to do so within our means, but always seeking.

Grateful thanks also go to the Muelheims family for generously hosting the seminar at the Spokane Country Club. We thank Gary for sharing his helpful and engaging insights.
