2008 Club Survey Results

On and Off the Field

Aidan Dowling (B94 U16 Navy) and Katie Weisbeck (G95 U16 Navy), members of Central Valley High School Team SWOOSH, were selected as a top four finalist in the national eCYBERMISSION competition.  Both have earned $6,500 toward college and the opportunity to enroll in a paid science internship program.

Team SWOOSH researched home energy consumption and its ability to create windmills that would decrease energy bills and benefit the environment. The students felt that such an invention could decrease the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) produced in homes and schools, subsequently reducing the effects of global warming.

Sean's Shadow Spiel

The soccer world has been an ever-changing one this past year, including a new name to the league our club participates in and is members of.  The new name is the Regional Club League (RCL).  All members of the Player Development League (PDL) are now housed in this league.

I do not want to complicate matters as the nuances of the change could be hard to follow; what is important to know is that the founding principles of the PDL have been wrapped up into the RCL but with more opportunities to influence the growth of the game at the competitive level.  We are excited by the continued opportunity to be a part of the top league in the state and it certainly could be argued that it is the top league in the northwestern part of the country.

Thanks to our players and coaches who have worked hard to earn the highest club ranking of any club in Eastern Washington and thanks to our families for their support!

U10 1Hopefully, you were all able to catch many of the games this past World Cup as it truly was a great tournament...after the first round of games anyway!  One of our Directors, Niko Varlamos, became hooked on the WC in 1994 and he is now a walking library of all of the World Cups.  I imagine that there are a few out there in our club that will follow in his footsteps as there are just few things in this world that will captivate an audience like this sport of soccer.

Soccer is a game that can be played anywhere and by anybody, and I do think that it is part of the allure of the sport.  Messi, Iniesta, Xavi...these guys are on top of this game and they are no more than 5'7" or 5'8".  There is something in this game for everybody-from the power of Podolski to the skill of Robben to the determination of Pujol-there are traits to be modeled.

I hope our players can take away the spirit in which this game can be played-the passion, the joy, the energy that emanates from its core.  When you give your all to the game, the game will give it all back and more.

I hope we all understand that this game is meant to be played by players and not controlled by coaches.  The game is at its best when U10 2we teach our players that they are the ones in control, that they are the ones that have to solve the problems of the game, and that they are the ones that deserve the attention.

I hope our parents can now translate the joy of watching these world class athletes into the joy of watching their own child, and those that are not their own, compete, strive, persevere, improvise, experiment, and most importantly, play.

This is a sport that at its crux is meant to be played; let's help our kids do just that in an enjoyable and supportive environment.  The reality is there will be many more that will not play in a World Cup than will, so let's take this for what it is-an opportunity to enjoy the little things of life.

Dorothee Solle, a German theologian, was once asked how she would explain what happiness is to a child; her response:  "I wouldn't explain it; I'd toss him a ball and let him play."

Enjoy your soccer,

"I never thought this group would have this many players going on to play in college when I first got them at U16.  They've done a great job of developing over the past three years and I wish each and every one of them success at the next level," said Head Coach Matt Stueckle.

Welcome Shadow United FC!

With the recent addition of U13 and U14 teams joining with their U11 and U12 teams to the unified Shadow from the Scotties Soccer club, team coaches and players submitted new regional club name and logo ideas to create their new brand.  Shadow United FC won with a tie-breaking vote over Fury FC, Lightning, Force FC and Scorpions!  The royal blue regional Select club color will now have a new brand to represent the Lakeside, Shadle Park, North Central, and Rogers High School areas of Spokane.
Watch for their new logo!

Improving Skills On Your Own
By Claudio Reyna, Youth Soccer Insider
April, 2009

A player can always improve his fitness by working out hard. He can comprehend certain tactics by studying the game. But how far he goes will be determined mainly by how well he has mastered ball skills. Those are acquired by playing, day after day, year after year.  A player who really wants to excel will spend as much time as possible playing small-sided games when he has playmates, and juggling and kicking against the wall when he's on his own.    More
