Zimmerman Gets Fresh Start
by Soccer365
January 21, 2010

Fresh Mainz II catch Preston Zimmerman (brother of Shadow B93 U16 player Derek Zimmerman) says he is extremely excited at the chance to rejuvenate his career in Germany after a nightmare stay with Austrian side Kapfenberg.

The 21-year old Washington native put pen to paper on a deal with the Bundesliga side's second team that lasts through the end of the season with an option for more on Thursday, effectively putting to rest a frustrating 2009.

Shadow players contribute to ODP Championship

The US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program (ODP) is a national identification and development program for high-level players. The program identifies and develops youth players throughout the country to represent their state association, region, and the United States in soccer competition. ODP teams are formed at the state association and regional levels, made up of the best players in various age groups.

The recent Region IV ODP Championships brought together boys' and girls' ODP teams in four different age groups from the 14 US Youth Soccer state associations that comprise Region IV - Washington, Alaska, Arizona, California North, California South, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah and Wyoming.

Shadow B94 U15 players Shane Stanley and Peter Sokolis are members of Washington's '95 Boys team, who went unbeaten in group play.  They defeated Colorado (4-0), Nevada (4-0) and Arizona (3-0) before closing out with a 1-1 draw against defending champions Cal South. A 3-0 semifinal victory over Arizona set up a rematch with Cal South in the final, where Washington prevailed, 1-0.

Congratulations Shane and Peter!
College Soccer Resource Guide

When Shadow high school players think about college soccer options available to them, they quickly realize their academic goals must take priority over soccer opportunities.  Playing for Shadow does not promise a college scholarship - in fact, most Shadow graduates find that very little athletic scholarship money is available, compared to academic assistance.

Fortunate is the player who can meld academic and soccer goals together and navigate the maze of options.  Many thanks to University of Idaho Head Women's Soccer Coach, Peter Showler, who has shared his "how to" resource.

Sean's Shadow Spiel

I know all sports have their signatures or methods of bringing out excitement, but soccer truly is the best sport for exuding the inner joy a sport can bring - in my humble opinion anyway!  I have not had much time to watch soccer lately but I was able to catch part of an FA Cup match this evening between Portsmouth and Southampton - not teams that readily come to mind in the world of soccer.  But, to watch the passion and joy that a goal can elicit truly is something that comes from deep within.  My hope is that players - our players - get to experience this joy throughout their career.

Last night marked a night at Whitworth where we reflected back upon our last season by watching our highlight video.  What was worth noting was the joy we had from the first game through the end.  We always had a goal of winning the conference and making it to the NCAA Tournament, but none of that was guaranteed.  Our aim is always to work hard toward that end, but we want to enjoy it throughout.  The reason for our success, I truly believe, is that we enjoy what we do.

To our Shadow players, my message is that you will find more joy the more you work, the more you pour yourself into what you are doing, and the more you give of yourself.  When you do, the game will mean something to you and then you will experience what the game can provide you.  But rest assured, you have to do the work - real work: at practice, on your own, and at the game.  This is the lesson for other areas of your life as well, including your family.

To our parents, please help your child enjoy playing.  You put in a lot of time for your child by making sacrifices to get them to practices and to games.  I firmly believe you do this out of love for your son or daughter.  I encourage you to not lose sight that your kids are kids.  They are not little professionals or collegiate athletes (same message to our coaches!).  They are going to make mistakes or have off days as even professionals do (even Ichiro goes 0-4 in games sometimes).  Encourage them along the way, through good and not-as-good times on the field.  That is what they want and need from you.  There really is no need to be critical as it is just a game; if it is their English homework, then, well, maybe...

I was able to coach our U12 Navy Girls' game today and what a great experience I had!  Every one of the players performed quite well, and our center back was simply outstanding.  We ended up losing a close game, but the things our players tried and the work they put in made the day very worthwhile for me; I hope the same for our parents as it certainly put a smile on my face!  Similarly, I was able to make our U12 Navy Boys game a couple of weeks ago.  What a game it was!  The boys were down 1-0 at halftime but stormed back to win 3-1.  To witness the work the boys put in and the joy they exuded after each goal was extremely special to me.  To be fair, it reminded me of the joy the Whitworth players showed throughout their season.

I hope all of our parents in our club can get this extreme joy from watching their kids play, whether they win or lose.  We are more than a GU basketball fan who cheers (but also criticizes when they are behind at the half); we are fans of our own kids.  This should lead us to be the truest fans of all; all-out supporters through thick and thin!

In the spirit of soccer,

Sean

PS:  A few weeks ago, I filled in for a missing linesman (actual title: Assistant Referee) for one of our games.  My message to you: it is not as easy as you think.  It is much easier when you do not "have" to make the call; when you are on the sideline as a parent or a coach, the job seems to be a piece of cake.  However, to do it right there is a lot to pay attention to.  It is just not that simple or easy.  So, when you get the chance, please thank the referees, especially our young ones who are giving back to the game.  And, if you are so inclined, you can look to help out also.  See the notice about the upcoming referee course!

We're All Shadow Ambassadors

Positive feedback is always a great reminder to our players and parents that their behavior on and off the field during soccer games and tournaments is noticed.  Some fantastic feedback about our Shadow G92 U17 and G93 U18 teams from the Holiday Inn Express - Hillsboro, OR during their January stay during the Portland Showcase:

"...It is so rewarding for my staff and I to hear that everything went well. We always aspire to provide quality service to all our guests. The two Spokane teams were a breed apart in behaviors than most. Thank you and kudos on having a well organized and respectful group. Please feel free to call me if and when you come back to the area. I would gladly assist you or any of the families from your teams."
