Sean's Shadow Spiel
The longer I am involved in all levels of soccer, the more I learn that the one thing that remains constant at every level is change. Change happens, it's how life works. But it's how change is handled that keeps one heading in a positive direction.
Shadow's sponsoring WA Youth Soccer (WYS) association is Spokane Youth Sports Association (SYSA). When your player commits to a Shadow team each year, they register with Shadow and then with SYSA. SYSA and the Spokane Valley clubs association, Spokane Valley Junior Soccer Association (SpVJSA), have been discussing change/merger/reorganization since October (you'll recall the email you all received several months ago from Phil Helean of SYSA that outlined the mandate for association change from WYS). How these two associations change, remain the same, work together in the future, or not, remains to be seen. As these two entities continue their future planning efforts together (hopefully) or apart, it's my hope that the kids they serve will enjoy more soccer opportunities in Spokane and Eastern Washington than ever before.
How does this impending change affect Spokane Shadow, you ask? The quickest answer is that Shadow is in full control of its future - and the future has never been brighter. So much work has been done to re-organize and manage our club since I came on board two years ago: revised articles & bylaws, policies, financial protocols, coordinated team management and team treasuries, etc.; lots of non-soccer work that doesn't involve the game, but makes our organization able to function professionally. Because we're well organized behind the scenes, the focus can remain on our players and our coaches work to help them find success and joy when they play soccer.
As we usher in a new year and a new decade, I am thankful that you, our players, parents, and supporters are with us on the journey. We promise that our Board, staff, coaches, and volunteers will remain committed to putting our players' best soccer interests first. Decisions may not happen on the timeline you prefer or be made the way you desire, but we promise they will be made in the best interest of each and every player we're so proud to have be a part of Shadow.
We have a very full agenda in the days and months ahead: our high school premier boys teams begin Championship Cup play on January 31, our premier teams who compete in the Player Development League (PDL) begin their Spring seasons on January 23, and our premier teams who compete in the WYS Premier League mark January 24 as the start of their Spring season. Our teams competing in District 6 Spring League will play from March 26th - May 23. Dates will be confirmed soon for our U10 Developmental teams competing in the Idaho Youth Soccer NW League.
Our 2010-2011 tryout dates, coaching announcements, and tournament schedule will be communicated to you as soon as details are available. I can appreciate the need to plan ahead; every effort will be made to share this information with our members first and will be done so through these e-mail newsletters and our Shadow website.
Last, please monitor the Shadow website for our league game and State Cup tournament schedules. I encourage you to come out and cheer on our Shadow teams as they compete - especially our teams in the State Cup tournament. You will see some fun, exciting soccer. And for our younger players, it's a wonderful way to see different levels of competition achieved by our older players in action.
In the spirit of soccer,
Sean Sean Bushy Technical Director

Shadow Spotlight: Peter Sokolis
![2008 Club Survey Results](http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs059/1102052225459/img/205.jpg?a=1102945239346) Shadow B94 U15 player Peter Sokolis boarded a
flight to Phoenix early Friday morning, January 15, meeting his
Washington state ODP team in Seattle on the way. He spent the weekend
representing Shadow and Washington state playing in the Region IV ODP
Championships, capping what was a very emotional week off the soccer
field. Peter, son of Ellen and Jim Sokolis, was adopted from Haiti in
2005, arriving in Spokane that year on Thanksgiving Day. "He thanks us
every night and at every meal for the life he is living with us. He
takes nothing for granted," says Ellen. "Peter was in a Haitian
orphanage and when we started the adoption process, it was to give
Peter a better life. When the Haitian government coup occurred in
2004, we tried to get Peter out of Haiti on a humanitarian flight. Our
reason for adopting him became to save his life, not just give him a
better life."
The earthquake in Haiti this week has brought
attention to Peter's story - including an interview on KXLY News.
Peter and his parents have been asked by others how to best help the
relief effort. They suggest that donations be made to the Red Cross or
another reputable organization, designated to Haiti Relief; prayers are
also greatly encouraged.
