Sean's Shadow Spiel

I recently returned from Lancaster, CA, where our U19 girls team took part in the Far West Regional tournament. All the state champions come together for the right to play for the National Championship. Our Shadow gals did the club proud by finishing in the Final Four. This team won three State Championships and competed in six straight state finals; they were Regional Quarterfinalists and Regional Semifinalists. Accomplishments that no other Spokane team has ever attained!
During this week long tournament, I was able to watch many games of many different age groups. As I have said before, I do enjoy watching soccer as there is always something to learn-watching soccer in the desert and wind of Lancaster wasn't the most enjoyable place I had ever been, however. What I noticed is that players really do like to play, they liked to be encouraged, they don't mind being told what they need to do and almost all will give a good effort. What players don't like however, is people yelling at them to do better, whether that be coaches or parents. I heard many coaches just yell for yelling sake seemingly-things like, "what are you doing?!", "you are being lazy!" "if you don't want to play, I'll find someone else that will!" and other things that really weren't coaching at all. To be fair, I have said these things myself, though usually in a half time talk and not in front of the whole world. I'm not sure what player really responds to verbal commands/abuse like that. It is one thing if it happens once, but another if it happens repeatedly. I watched the energy just drain from teams as frustrations mounted.
So, why bring this up to parents? Well, it is not so you can better criticize your coach! It is to keep us all on guard. Parents sole job when it comes to the game of soccer is to encourage their child-supportive encouragement. The coach's job is to teach-by encouraging, being attentive, by instructing, by caring, but by all means she is to teach. Players are to play; they are to put in an effort each time out and they are to strive to better for themselves and their teammates' sake. If we can keep aware of our roles, this game is much more enjoyable-for players, coaches, parents, and even referees!
Another thing I took away from this tournament is that eventually almost everybody loses (well, except my little brother whose U19 girls team won the Regional tournament; as did my oldest son's team as he played for my brother's club. My girls got the wrong Bushéy, I guess!) But again, everybody loses; even state champions. And sometimes, they lose by big scores. So what? Well, I just want to remind us all that the point is not the losing; let's not get caught up in that. Let's do get caught up in progress, in style of play, in the enjoyment of the game, in the challenge of the game, in the growth of the game. Our club will see its share of losses; sometimes the scores may be large but many times we will see successes especially if we can look long term and seek the intangibles more than the tangibles (though it is always nice to get those once in awhile for sure! And we do, see previous releases regarding the number of players we witness going off to play collegiate soccer, two semi final teams, players representing our state in the Olympic Development Program, etc.)
At the end of my trip, I flew to Seattle to catch the last day of games for our boys teams (along with my two younger sons) at the Rainier Challenge. For a couple of our teams it was their first experience across the mountains, for another team it was their first tournament with 8 new players. What a great experience! Even though there were losses, it was a great learning experience - and that is what the summer soccer tournaments are for: to challenge us and see where we need to head. Our focus is not on results, it is on making them better soccer players. There is one major time where we focus on results and that is the state tournament (or Regional tournament if we can get that far!). Right now, however, we use the games as the test and the coach is then to grade the test to come up with the proper curriculum for the coming weeks, months, and seasons. What I took from this tournament is that our future is bright as club! Our younger gals teams had great showings a week prior at the Rainier Challenge and our younger boys' teams had great learning experiences all of which is fantastic!
Speaking of fantastic, I was able to see the unveiling of our new Shadow U11 teams, both premier and select level teams at the recent SYSA Spring Classic. What a sight it was! Shadow uniforms were everywhere, smiling kids on all the fields and a promising generation of soccer kicked off their next stage of soccer development; exciting stuff! Our club's main objective remains to provide the highest quality of competitive soccer in the Spokane region. Thanks to our players, coaches, and our families we continue to set many standards and we will continue to try and do so.
While all of this was going on, our new U10's were being welcomed into the program-38 girls and 28 boys are currently beginning their Shadow careers and what great soccer it is to see! I hope you will be able to catch them at some point during the coming year.
Thanks for your membership and thanks for your support. Enjoy your soccer and Go Shadow!
Sean Sean Bushéy Technical Director
PS: as I finish writing this our '91 Girls U18 team finished in the US Club Regional Final - with 12 players on their roster! Great work girls!
