"Street soccer is the most natural educational system that can be found"
Street Soccer - Missing in America? by Larry Paul
By analyzing street soccer yourself, you will conclude that its strength is that it is played daily in a competitive form, with a preference for the match on all sorts of 'street playing fields', usually in small groups. Rarely in street soccer do you see youths busy practicing isolated technical and tactical drills. No, it is always the competitive form, where youth players learn from their mistakes, unconscious of the technical, tactical, mental and physical qualities they are developing through the scrimmages being played. Sean's Shadow Spiel
Washington state soccer began a shift in the calendar last year about when it would play its State Cup with this year becoming a bit more what it shall be like for the foreseeable future. Instead of all ages playing at the same time of year, they have begun to spread them out to accommodate for a variety of factors - some of which we will agree with and some we won't. There is just no easy answer and certainly no way to account for every activity, weather condition, time of year, or what have you to come up with a "right" time to have it. In the end, it is where it is - and here it is: http://www.wsysa.com/Programs/Competitive/Tournament/ USYouthSoccerWashingtonStateChampionships/tabid/736/Default.aspx What does that mean for the Spokane Shadow? In many respects, the new movement will make it easier for us to participate, which is great because to stay as members in the highly competitive and distinctive Player Development League (PDL) each club must earn "points". Virtually, the only way to earn points is to participate and advance in State Cup. Shadow is ranked as the tenth best soccer
club in Washington State and is the
only soccer club within the Inland Empire region to be members in the PDL League; a league
that hosts the Top 20 soccer clubs in Washington State. The PDL was
formed to provide like vs. like competition for the state's top clubs;
each club must meet stringent developmental, on field success and
coaching criteria to be members. The top 10 ranking and membership in
the PDL is a tribute to the hard work and dedication of the Club's 300+
players, parents, and professional coaches. So, garnering State Cup points will help ensure Shadow's high state ranking.
However, the other reason we want to participate is to further our development as players, teams, and Club as a whole. We, as a club, have cut back on the number of summer tournaments to allow for us to participate in the State Cup (as well as account for two league seasons for all of our age groups, save the high school ages). Development can only take place over time and this helps us along that path. There are two main cups:
1. The Championship Cup, which is intended for our Navy Teams. 2. The Challenge Cup, which is intended for our Sky teams as we seek to match like vs. like competition.
Points can be earned from either cup, though a Navy team cannot earn points in the Challenge Cup. There is a third Cup called the Commissioner's Cup, but that is for lower-level teams. I just wanted to give a brief statement as some of this is new to people, but also I did want to let you know that your team manager's, on the request from their coach, will begin the registration process soon. Deadlines are fast approaching for some ages. Ultimately, coaches will lead the way regarding whether or not his/her team will participate in State Cup, but do know as a Club we are intending on having most of our teams participate as it follows along our developmental goals for our players, teams and Club.
Enjoy your soccer,
Sean Sean Bushy Technical Director Spokane Shadow [email protected]
