Coaching Philosophy: The game must be enjoyable and fun, but I am one that believes in a structured, demanding, and disciplined training environment that is always asking the players to be better. Players must be pushed constantly, all the while understanding that you respect their efforts and appreciate it when they are working hard. A positive learning environment is very important, but players also need to be held to a higher standard.
Every training session must replicate the game environment to ensure that players are able to translate lessons taught at training to the actual game. It is my goal to always plan sessions around the areas that we need improvement in, but always looking to ensure that they are in "game like" activities.
Communication with players is key for them to know where they are and what needs to improve. From the team perspective this is just as important as we work together to play the game well and effectively. However, all of this comes full circle to my first comments though as the game MUST be enjoyable and fun, otherwise why play the "GAME"?

What Makes Shadow Unique?
Shadow-Sponsored SYSA-S Coaches ClinicsShadow coaches Niko Varlamos, Kara Sharpe, and Kevin Moon hosted a coaches clinic for all SYSA-S volunteer soccer coaches on August 23 at Dwight Merkel Field. Joined by coaches Steve McCormick and Jeff Hulse from the Breakers club, Shadow coaches offered training and education to nearly 60 SYSA-S volunteer coaches. Coaches were divided into two groups and focused on keeping the game of soccer fun to play: U6-U8: 1v1s, 2v2 and 3v3 game exercises that allowed players to use their feet; including dribbling and passing techniques. U9-U14: same focus as above with exercises and games added (like how to take a player on to beat them off the dribble).

Shadow Player Expectations Guidelines for Guest Playing
Shadow reminds all players about the commitments made to the club when you signed the Player/Parent Expectation form; specifically guidelines for guest player for other teams:
"If a player is asked to participate in any competition as a guest player for a different team, they are responsible for communicating the opportunity to their Shadow coach. In addition, the player must provide their Shadow coaches contact information to the coach of the outside team. Then, request that coach to make official contact via phone to their Shadow coach asking permission for the player to participate as a professional courtesy."
Shadow has had a number of players guest play and we rarely stand in the way, however, we have had a handful of times where players are making the decision before asking their coach, or not notifying at all. This should not happen; we very rarely will say no but it is important to communicate well with your coach. It is also very important that the Other team's coach contact our coach. This fosters better relationships and understanding. Otherwise, it is a recruiting violation, which can lead to sanctions for that coach - and we don't want that to happen.

New Soccer Field Construction Begins Soon
Construction of new soccer fields and a softball complex at Dwight Merkel will begin in November 2008 or early Spring 2009. Andrew Rypien Field, the South Complex, and other parks and school fields will be used during the construction, which is expected to take up to two years. Collaborative efforts are underway with Spokane Parks and Recreation and SYSA to secure other fields for SYSA games and practices during construction.

First Aid Kits Donated
Each Shadow team recently received a new first aid kit, thanks to the generosity of the Muelheims family (Erik, BU13 and Karl, BU15) and Spokane Cardiology. The kits are carried by each team manager, so be sure to contact them should you need minor medical assistance on the sidelines.

Kids Care Volunteers Needed!
Following our successful Kickin' Hunger Food Drive last spring, Shadow will again partner with SYSA-S for our fall community service event: the Kidz Care program. This donation drive will be held Saturday, October 11th from 9am-3pm. The beneficiary is the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery (www.vanessabehan.org).
Shadow parents and players are encouraged to volunteer to collect donated items for the Nursery at booths set up at Dwight Merkel Complex, South Complex, Andrew Rypien Fields and Farwell Elementary from 9am to 3pm. Four volunteers are needed for each shift.
Please contact Monaca Duff at velocitywrx@yahoo.com if you can offer volunteer time for this important event. Thank you! |
