Greetings!
Some Simple Green End of Year Thoughts
Try as I might, I just couldn't wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and leave it at that. I can, however, promise this will be short because we are all busy spending time with family and friends or getting ready to.
Here are my deep green thoughts as we say good-bye to 2011 and get ready to welcome 2012.
#1 Take care of yourself - good care. Shoot for life in balance (I know - sounds like a plug for Miraval) every day. Make dates with yourself to catch a movie, have a glass of wine or a beer with a friend, take a nap, go on a picnic, sleep in -- remember the word play. If you don't take care of yourself, you can't take care of anyone or anything else. I invite you to remind me.
#2 Keep sustainability simple - put your reusable bags in the car, just say no to plastic bottles, make more healthy eating choices, eat something raw (not meat!), unplug your many devices whenever you can, pick one more step to take. (Plant a garden? Meatless Mondays? Volunteering? Solar power? Green vacation?)
#3 Don't be sad about the shape our planet is in. It doesn't do any good. Be the change instead. Others will follow your lead - trust me.
#4 Treat Mother Earth as you would your own mother (which is hopefully with love, respect and kindness.) You wouldn't drop garbage o n her living room floor, nor would you mindlessly take all the food, water, and sources of energy out of her house, feed her food not fit for your pets, spray toxic chemicals all over her house and hope it doesn't harm her. You get the picture.
#5 Practice intentional kindness at least once a day. (Thanks Ben's Bells!) If we all do it, peace has a chance. Let's be proud of being dreamers - of a kinder, stronger, caring world. The very thought sustains me. Thank you for being a part of my world. I know how blessed I am.

Mrs. Green says Check It Out!
Check out this website: BSP. It's not about green but my daughter Katie helped design it. Why not share something totally fun and random as part of my end of year celebration? Being a proud Mom is a good thing.

Best of Mrs. Green Show
Because I will be spending time with family and friends making more wonderful, healthy, sustainable holiday memories, we will be broadcasting our wonderful show from last year. This show really is all about you. Listeners/followers called in to share with us their greatest, greenest holiday tradition. It was a fun, informative show and well worth listening to again - especially and even for me! This show sponsored by The Fairfax Companies.
December 31
MADD National President Jan Withers and Discount Cab, Mike Wall
What better way to start the new year than with messages of drinking responsibly, not putting your life or the life of others at risk and about some of the options you want to make sure are in place as we welcome 2012. We will talk with Jan Withers about MADD, the progress they continue to make in reducing the number of deaths related to drunk driving and some thoughts on what you can do to help yourself and others keep it safe on the road. Mike Wall will share with us one of those ways - lining up your cab! Discount Cab is one of the largest cab companies in Arizona, all their cars are GREEN and fuel efficient. I look forward to both of these interviews and hope you will join me. This show sponsored by Chapman Tucson.

Story of Stuff, Allison Cook, Director of Special Projects What a way to start Mrs. Green's New Year. Straight from their website: "When Annie Leonard and her friends at Free Range Studios set out in 2007 to share what she'd learned about the way we make, use and throw away Stuff, they thought 50,000 views would be a good result for her '20-minute cartoon about trash.' Today, with over 15 million views and counting, The Story of Stuff is one of the most watched environmental-themed online movies of all time." As their longest serving staff person, Allison has been there, done that and seen it all! Think I'm excited? And we will ask Allison about their new release: The Story of Broke. OMG - the things we will learn. This show sponsored by The Fairfax Companies.

Gulf Monitoring Consortium - Guests from SkyTruth, SouthWings & Waterkeeper Remember the BP Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico? Lots of us do. This consortium is an innovative partnership that is systematically monitoring oil pollution in the Gulf of Mexico with satellite images and mapping, aerial reconnaissance and photography, and on-the-water observation and sampling. This unique effort led by three non-profit organizations is collecting and publishing images, observations and sampling data of the Gulf of Mexico. They are positioned to rapidly respond to reported and suspected oil pollution incidents. No wonder I can't sleep the night before the show! This show sponsored by Chapman Tucson. January 21, 2012
Joe Abraham, Director, Office of Sustainability, University of Arizona Joe Abraham has a big job, big dreams and a big personality. The Office of Sustainability was established in October 2010 as part of a larger reorganization of UA Campus Sustainability to improve the coordination of environmental sustainability programs across the university. The Office coordinates students, faculty and staff to ensure the University of Arizona is a top-ranked institution among its peers for leadership in environmental sustainability as it pertains to campus design, student engagement, operations, education, research, and outreach. Like I said, big job. This show is sponsored by PopCycle. January 28, 2012
Linda Powers, Engineering Professor & Bio5 Institute Member, University of Arizona Linda Powers spent part of her summer biking around Tanzania testing wells for bacteria using a unique instrument designed at the UA. As you know, I am obsessed with the fact that 1.5 billion people go without clean water every day. You are not going to believe what she and doctoral student Aminata Kilung accomplished as they were out cycling and testing for as much as 15 hours a day. In this case, hearing will be believing because I doubt this kind of excursion is in my future, but one never knows. Again, can't wait. This show sponsored by Goodwill Industries of Southern Arizona. ON BEHALF OF THE ENTIRE MRS. GREEN TEAM: THANKS FOR BEING A PART OF OUR WORLD EVERY DAY IN EVERY WAY. BE SAFE! BE HAPPY! |
