Greetings!

You Are What You Eat (and you are not a bug!)
In keeping with my merry month of May theme of REDUCE as the first "R" - I invite you to consider reducing the amount of pesticides you eat on a daily basis. OMG - researchers of all kinds have been busy testing what we eat - especially in the fruit and vegetable department.

The good news? The Environmental Working Group developed a guide which analyzed data collected from nearly 96,000 tests for pesticide residues in produce between 2000 and 2008. (Hope that's long enough for you long fact finders!) The information was collected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture AND the U.S Food and Drug Administration. You can read more by visiting
www.foodnews.org.

So about that good news...Here is a list of the "clean" 15 - those which tested lowest in pesticides (in order): onions, avocado, sweet corn, pineapple, mangos, sweet peas, asparagus, kiwi, cabbage, eggplant, cantaloupe, watermelon, grapefruit, sweet potato, honeydew, and melon!

The bad news might actually make you sick if you really think about it so don't - just buy organic. The "dirty dozen" (and I mean DIRTY): celery, peaches, strawberries, apples, blueberries, nectarines, bell peppers, spinach, kale (will never pass through my lips anyway), cherries, POTATOES, grapes (imported).

Note about celery from The Daily Green:  A perennial entrant on the Dirty Dozen list, 64 pesticides detected in residue on this veggie make celery rank No. 1 in the 2010 analysis, up from No. 4 in 2009.

Sick yet? Read on about peaches:  Peaches, No. 1 on the Dirty Dozen list in 2009, rank No. 2 in 2010; 62 pesticides have been detected in residue on peaches. Read more

So why, might you ask, do you think cancer rates are on the rise?

Mrs. Green on YouTube
Have I mentioned lately that being Mrs. Green is fun? I invite you to take a look at just how much fun I am having on this journey by visiting Mrs. Green's World and clicking on WATCH: YouTube videos. Most popular? Mrs. Green and the High Efficiency Toilet. The toilet obsession continues....

You Can't Win If You Don't Enter!
First, warm, sincere thanks from my very green heart to all the people who entered the April contest (how you celebrated Earth Day!) And a HUGE congratulations to our winner, Amy Kaminski, who shared her story and a GREAT picture:

My Son, Oliver, 5 years old, wanted to help "make the Earth healthy". So Eloise (3 years old), Oliver and I walked around our neighborhood picking up trash. We live in a neighborhood with a strict HOA and I wasn't sure how much we would be able find but they were very excited to find little bits of paper, plastic bottle caps and other random trash can flyaways. I found it disconcerting to hear their cheers, "A cigarette, mom, look! yeah!" We had fun and the "hood" looks great.

Please visit Mrs. Green's World and click on the contest page to see results and pictures of our last contest, AND while you are there, PLEASE enter the May contest. The prizes are really awesome - including one of the most popular items we have EVER featured: The WeBe bag! You will thank me and then I will thank you!

Rosie on the House

Did You Know?
Did you know that Colleen Crowninshield, from Pima Association of Governments' Clean Cities program might actually be more passionate about alternative fuels and about what she does on a daily basis than I am? Did you know that the Clean Cities Coalition has over 90 members? And that the Clean Cities staff work with local businesses and government to help guide them through the process necessary to establish the foundation for a viable alternative fuels market? Did you know that every success they have helps reduce dependence on foreign oil and reduce vehicle emissions (the single largest contributor to air pollution in many cities)? Did you know that the Clean Cities program in Tucson, Arizona, is one of the top FIVE most successful coalitions in the country? Did you know that once a month, Colleen appears on Mrs. Green to update the public about alternative fuels and about important events Clean Cities is putting on in the community? And last, but equally important as all of the above, did you know how much fun it is to work with Colleen and Katherine Vankirk? Very!

Upcoming Shows

Elliott Norse5/15
Mrs. Green is on the road for this show - literally! I will be in Los Angeles celebrating the graduation of our youngest daughter from the University of Southern California. We will be airing a prior show from "The Best of Mrs. Green" - Elliot Norse from the Marine Conservation Biology Institute.

Chapman Automotive Tucson5/22
Chapman - What's new in the auto world? Our very own Neb Yonas, Chapman General Manager and human being extraordinaire will be letting us know! Not only is Chapman Tucson family owned and one of the largest car dealerships in southern Arizona and the entire State, Neb knows everything I have ever asked him about any car in all of the Chapman dealerships. I know that I will be asking him to more adequately explain the inner workings of the amazing Honda Insight but I will also ask him to give an overview on the health of the auto industry, what's new, what's hot and what's not! I will also do my "Neb, what can consumers expect to be driving in 10 years? Is there an alternative fuel vehicle that will lead the way?" I love having Neb as a guest because he is fun AND full of knowledge about things we all want to know. Please plan to join us.

Gas Hole5/29
GasHole - Mrs. Green will interview filmmakers Jeremy Wagener and Scott Roberts, who will talk about their documentary: GasHole. The two have joined forces to bring the history of oil prices and future alternative fuels into focus. Concerned with American dependence on foreign oil and curious as to how America could go from the largest exporter of oil to the largest importer, Wagener and Roberts sought out the opinions of such experts as U.S. Department of Energy officials, Alternative Fuel Producers, Alternative Fuel Consumers, Professors of Economics, and congressional leaders from both the Democratic and Republican parties. If you buy gas, you will want to tune in as Mrs. Green seeks some answers to the questions that many American consumers would like answers to. AND we will have a special interview with Mayor Bob Dixon from Greensburg, Kansas - the town destroyed by a tornado in 2007. Mayor Dixon will give us an update on what is planned in Greensburg to celebrate the anniversary of the Midwest town that was literally too tough to die!

Jeffrey Smith
6/5
For the first time EVER, Mrs. Green will be airing two "Best of Mrs. Green" shows consecutively. Why you ask? Because Mrs. Green will be in HAWAII for the first time ever. The June 5th show will be a re-broadcast of Jeffery Smith - author of Seeds of Deception, discussing genetically modified foods

SWEEP6/12

The choice for this "Best of Mrs. Green" shows is Jeffrey Schlegel from Southwest Energy Efficiency Project (SWEEP).

Personal note from Mrs. Green: I appreciate your support and your understanding of the need to repeat two shows. To be perfectly honest, I don't like doing pre-records (and do them only when necessary) nor do I like to have repeats. But alas, I continue to strive to find the balance in my life so.... Hawaii - here I come!
