| GENETICALLY ENGINEERED ALFALFA ACTION ALERT | | Tell Secretary of Agriculture Vilsack to Adopt Moratorium on Planting GE Alfalfa Today we are asking for your support of a petition to Sec. of Agriculture Vilsack to ask for a moratorium on planting Genetically Engineered Alfalfa.
Supporting organic farmers is an important aspect of creating strong local food economies and ensuring access to organically grown foods for our future. The USDA is under intensive pressure from Monsanto and other big agribusiness to fully deregulate GE alfalfa for planting without restrictions this spring. The deregulation of GE alfalfa is a serious threat to organic dairy farmers and other organic farmers.
Previously we've alerted you to this issue and forwarded links to a petition to the USDA on this topic and a petition to President Obama. This petition goes to the Sec. of Agriculture and we're encouraging you to consider signing all three petitions. They are not mutually exclusive and target three different key decision makers. The Center for Food Safety petition goes to the Secretary of Agriculture Vilsack.
Click here to sign the petition.

National Co-op Grocers Association Petition to the USDA. January 24th has been set as the deadline for public comments, so time is of the essence to make your voice heard in support of organic farmers! Thank you for your attention and consideration of this important issue.

RECIPE: ROASTED BEETS WITH GARLIC AND WALNUTS
| | Serves 6
INGREDIENTS 4-5 red beets ½ cup olive oil 5 cloves garlic, peeled ½ cup walnuts ¼ cup (or more) orange juice parsley (optional)
PREPARATION Wash beets and, while still wet, wrap individually in foil. Roast in a 375° oven for about an hour, or until tender. Allow to cool (may be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator). Peel off skin and chop.
Sauté garlic in olive oil at a low temperature until it begins to turn golden. Add walnuts and continue to cook, stirring frequently, until walnuts become fragrant and garlic is light brown. Let walnut mixture cool a bit. Transfer to a food processor and pulse for a few seconds. Add orange juice and pulse some more, until mixture has the consistency of salad dressing.
Toss with cooled, roasted beets and sprinkle with chopped parsley. |
