STOP DEREGULATION OF GENETICALLY ENGINEERED ALFALFA
| | Contact President Obama now Near the end of December we alerted the membership of the USDA's intentions of releasing its prohibition on the sale and cultivation of genetically engineered alfalfa. Last Friday we forwarded the National Cooperative Grocers Association's petition to the USDA. We encourage our membership to consider this petition from Food & Water Watch as well which will go directly to President Obama in support of stopping the USDA from any deregulation of genetically engineered alfalfa. Thanks you for your considerations and attention to this issue. The USDA, under pressure from Monsanto and other large agribusiness interests has decided to act on this without setting time for public comment and time is of the essence in making your voice heard.
Sign the petition.

RECIPE: ROASTED BEETS WITH GARLIC AND WALNUTS
| | Serves 6
INGREDIENTS 4-5 red beets ½ cup olive oil 5 cloves garlic, peeled ½ cup walnuts ¼ cup (or more) orange juice parsley (optional)
PREPARATION Wash beets and, while still wet, wrap individually in foil. Roast in a 375° oven for about an hour, or until tender. Allow to cool (may be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator). Peel off skin and chop.
Sauté garlic in olive oil at a low temperature until it begins to turn golden. Add walnuts and continue to cook, stirring frequently, until walnuts become fragrant and garlic is light brown. Let walnut mixture cool a bit. Transfer to a food processor and pulse for a few seconds. Add orange juice and pulse some more, until mixture has the consistency of salad dressing.
Toss with cooled, roasted beets and sprinkle with chopped parsley. |
