ANNIVERSARY OF THE MODERN COOPERATIVE MOVEMENT
| | Honoring the Rochdale Pioneers December 21 December 21st is the night that the candles of cooperation were lit 166 years ago. The birth of the modern cooperative movement is considered to be December 21st, 1844 in the Northern England town of Rochdale. On that date, the darkest day of the year, at 6:00 pm, eight weavers opened a cooperative to sell flour, butter, sugar, and oatmeal to provide themselves with an alternative to the company store, which overcharged its customers for low quality products. The gas company refused to provide fuel for the controversial food co-op's lights, expecting to thwart the store opening. Undaunted, the determined weavers located a source for tallow candles in bulk, which they used to light the store. They sold the extras to their members. This group, called the Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society, founded their co-op on a set of principles which became the basis for the International Principles of Cooperation. These principles serve as a guide to cooperatives, (including River Valley Market), all around the world to this day: 1) Open and Voluntary Membership 2) Democratic Member Control 3) Member Economic Participation 4) Autonomy and Independence 5) Education, Training, and Information 6) Cooperation Among Cooperatives 7) Concern for Community In honor of this historic anniversary we are offering all our member-owners a special sale price on Sunbeam beeswax candles through December 31. Sunbeam Candles works to promote green business practices. Their shop, located in the beautiful rolling hills of New York's Southern Tier, is covered in solar panels. They compost their waste, reuse and recycle all wax, offer a return packing materials program, support local business, carpool, and pay their workers a living wage. (Member-owner sale price $4.59, regular price $6.59.) Wishing everyone a happy anniversary of cooperatives, happy holidays, and a wonderful new year from everyone at the co-op!
