Now-September 30 EAT LOCAL, AMERICA! This month, we join forces with co-ops across the country to celebrate the joys of eating local. Fill out an entry form at the Customer Service Desk, and you may win a fabulous local food item during our daily drawing. At the end of the month we'll draw from all entrants and give away a beautiful book: Eating Local: The cookbook inspired by America's farmers, by Janet Fletcher.
September 10, 5-8 pm NORTHAMPTON ARTS NIGHT OUT RECEPTION Meet artist of the month Kelly Facto, collage. Live music with Tom Bradbury. Refreshments served.
September 15, 7-8:30 pm MEMBER-OWNER OUTREACH MEETING Come help plan upcoming River Valley Market events and dream up new things to do like shopping cart drill teams and bicycle-made smoothies! Due to the Rosh Hashana holiday, this meeting has been moved to the 3rd Wednesday. All member-owners are welcome. Come to the meeting or contact Betsy.

 Since 1828, Apex Orchards has been supplying the area with fine fresh produce. Tim Smith and the Smith family produce a wide selection of apples, peaches, pears, Asian pears, plums, and apricots. Apex is located on a Shelburne hillside with a spectacular view of the valley below. Have you tasted this year's peaches? Hot, dry weather has made them sweet and juicy!

Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society (Leverett) Nominated by Monica Nunez Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society provides shelter, education, advocacy, and assistance for animals and people in need. Dakin is a private, non-profit organization serving the communities of Franklin, Hampshire and Hampden counties. Dakin relies solely on contributions from individuals who care about animals to bring services to the community.

Hadley Angel Garden (Hadley) Nominated by Betsy Powell The mission of the Hadley Angel Garden is to help children of diverse backgrounds, many of whom are living in group homes in our area, to create an organic landscape of vegetables, herbs, fruit, and flowers on a plot in Hadley, Massachusetts. For many of these kids, aged 14-17, this experience is the first of its kind. Now in its second year, the project fights hunger by donating its fresh produce to regional survival centers and teaches children the grace of charity through volunteerism and the art of gardening.

Be one of our first early shoppers and you may win a $50 gift card! In response to many requests from customers, we have begun opening the co-op at 8 am, 7 days a week.
Stop by and pick up a cup of fresh-brewed, fair trade organic coffee and a breakfast sandwich, or a grab & go lunch. Get your grocery shopping out of the way after dropping the kids off at school. We look forward to seeing you first thing in the morning!
On our first week of early opening (August 23-29), come by the co-op between 8 and 9 am and enter our daily drawing for a $50 gift card (co-op employees not eligible).

Delicious enough for your lunchbox Share your dreamy nut butter vision! We're inviting kids of all ages to submit ideas for the most outrageously creative and enticing nut butter sandwich ever.
Stop by the Customer Service Desk and fill out a form, or e-mail your idea to info@rivervalleymarket.coop with "Nut Butter Sandwich" in the subject line. The only rules are that: 1. Your sandwich must contain at least one type of nut butter (peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter, sunflower nut butter...) 2. Your sandwich must contain only food-based ingredients
We will collect all entries submitted by 9 pm on Monday, September 6 and put them out to the membership for an e-mail vote on Wednesday, September 8. Five lucky winners will receive fun prizes and the top vote-getting entry will be made-to-order by our deli on September 18!

Enjoy the fruits of the season Our annual celebration of local food starts today! We're joining with co-ops across the country for Eat Local, America!
We'll have a daily giveaway of food items grown and produced within approximately 100 miles of the co-op. Stop by and complete a form, and we'll enter you into the daily drawing, going on between now and September 30th. You could win a jar of Real Pickles, a dozen Diemand Farm eggs, or one of many other local products.
The Grand Prize, drawn from all entries submitted by September 30th, will be a beautiful book: Eating Local: The cookbook inspired by America's farmers, by Janet Fletcher.

It's election time for the River Valley Market Board of Directors Consider serving your co-op as a member of the co-op Board. Any member-owner in good standing is eligible to run for a three-year term.

RECIPE: CHERRY BALSAMIC ROASTED BEET SALAD

Serves 4 INGREDIENTS 3 lbs locally grown beets 2 oz dried cherries 2 T aged balsamic vinegar 1 t fresh thyme, chopped ¾ t sea salt Olive oil
PREPARATION Preheat oven to 350°. Wash beets, cut off stems, peel, and steam for 20-30 minutes, or until a fork can be inserted easily. Cut into wedges. Place the beets in a bowl and toss with just enough olive oil to coat them. Spread them on a baking sheet and roast them for about 30 minutes, or until shrinking and browned. Place cherries in a heatproof bowl. In a small saucepan, heat the vinegar until steaming and pour over cherries. Cover and let sit for 15 minutes. In a food processor, purée cherry mixture and thyme. Toss with the roasted beets and season to taste with sea salt. Serve warm or chilled.
