Every summer for more than thirty years, John Bemben and his brother James of Bemben Farm in Hadley have produced sweet corn to grace the tables of customers in the Pioneer Valley and beyond. John's grown children Jonathan, Jennifer and Jesse-the 3rd generation of Bembens to help with the corn crop- joke that they have "corn muscles" from their days of picking, packing and loading 50-70 lb bags of corn. In addition to corn, Bemben Farm produces butternut squash and pumpkins. Try some Bemben corn from the co-op for a true local taste of summer.
Sample grilled local Bemben corn this Sunday, August 15 from 1-4 pm!

AUGUST ARTS NIGHT OUT

Featuring Photographer Maria Cuerda, "Immigrants in Springfield" Artist's statement: These are photos of immigrants who live in Springfield taken between 2007 and 2009. The children in these photos were born in Springfield and live in the poorest part of the city. These families work here to support elderly parents and to send the children they've left behind to school. They come from communities that have suffered the effects of civil war, violence and repression against those who act to defend the right to their land and their communities.
About 2,000 immigrants from Mexico and Guatemala live in Springfield. Men and women find work in agriculture at local farms up and down the Connecticut River valley. They earn minimum wage working at backbreaking jobs. In spite of working to put food on our tables they often experience hunger for lack of work during our long winters and are the targets of crime. These courageous people migrated here to work as a result of international economic policies which contribute to the structural poverty in their home countries. In spite of their harsh lives, they support each other and find ways to survive and flourish. They don't see themselves as victims but as actors working hard to make a better life for their families. These are the faces of my community. Their kindness and their humility inspire me everyday to work with them for a better future and to hope that others will see mirrored back at them their own humanity and grace.
All the proceeds from the sale of these photos will go to support the Pioneer Valley Project's Immigrant Food Fund and are tax deductible. For more information contact Maria Cuerda, at maria.cuerda@gmail.com.
