Pennsylvania Civil War Road Show Comes
to Lancaster County

Civil War Road ShowAs all Civil War history buffs know, this year is the 150th Anniversary of the start of the Civil War, and with that milestone comes a multitude of commemorative events and activities. One such event that's coming to Lancaster County, is the PA Civil War Road Show.

The Pennsylvania Civil War 150 Road Show is a traveling exhibition housed in an expandable 53-foot tractor-trailer created for Pennsylvania residents and visitors of all ages. From 2011 to 2014, it will travel throughout the Commonwealth (making stops in all 67 counties) bringing its interactive exhibits to each host location. Visitors will also experience related programs and performances under a Civil War-era tent. The road show features hands-on, interactive displays to tell stories that will be engaging for the whole family. From the original "3-D experience" of stereoscopes, to the voices of individual Pennsylvanians, to the scenes of camp and home life, visitors will be immersed in a new understanding of how America's greatest crisis changed the lives of Pennsylvanians.

The Road Show (including Encampments / Reenactors) is being hosted at the

Ephrata Public Library, located at 550 South Reading Road in Ephrata. Dates and times are:

  • Saturday, September 17th: 10 am - 6 pm

Apples

Apple season is in full tilt here in Lancaster County.  So this is a perfect time to feature an apple recipe.  Here is one to make your mouth water just thinking about it!

Baked Apple French Toast

3/4 C. brown sugar                        18 slices (1/4" thick) day-old

1/2 C. butter                                   French bread

2 T. light corn syrup                        4 tart apples, peeled and sliced

3 eggs                                              thin

3/4 C. milk                                     1 tsp. vanilla

SAUCE:

1 C. applesauce                               10 oz. jar apple jelly

1/2 tsp. cinnamon                           1/8 tsp. cloves

In a small saucepan, combine sugar, butter and syrup; boil about 5 minutes until thick.  Pour into an ungreased 9x13" pan.  Arrange apples on top of syrup.  Mix eggs, milk and vanilla.  Dip French bread in egg mixture, arrange over top of apple slices.  Cover and refrigerate overnight.  Remove from refrigerator 1 hour before baking .  Bake uncovered at 350 degrees for 45 minutes until top is browned.  Serves 15.

Sauce:  Combine applesauce, jelly, cinnamon and cloves, cook over medium heat until jelly is melted.  Spoon warm sauce on top and let set a bit before serving.  (Even better reheated.)

B&B's For Vets
Veteran

Last year many of our inns teamed up with an organization from Virginia that started a free night for Veterans in November on Veterans Day Eve.  Inns donated one or more of their rooms to host Veterans to show our appreciation of their service to our Country.  The program was very successful and has evolved to a National level supported and organized by PAII (Professional Association of Innkeepers International).  Check out Better Way to Stay's website for more information about this nationwide undertaking.  Many of our inns will once again be offering a free night lodging to Veterans on Thursday night November 10.    We will be hosting a page on our website devoted to this wonderful event.  We will have many Local businesses joining us in celebrating our veterans by offering special discounts during Veteran's Day.  For a listing of those participating businesses, click here.  If you are or know of Veterans who would like to participate in this program, share this information with them.
