Transformations at the Lancaster Quilt and Textile Museum
Quilting is a major part of Lancaster County's culture and heritage, and the art of quilting is celebrated in all its glory at the Lancaster Quilt and Textile Museum. The museum is located in the heart of Lancaster City's vibrant arts district, just steps away from Central Market, in a stunning 1912 Beaux Arts Bank building. This past November, the curatorial staff of the Heritage Center of Lancaster County began the process of a major exhibit transformation at the Lancaster museum by removing the 17 museum cases that currently house the Esprit Quilt Collection in the Beaux Arts Grand Banking Hall.
Dr. Patricia T. Herr, Quilt Historian and Curator of textile exhibits, reflects "After five years in their current location, it is time for a new and fresh exhibition of our permanent Amish Quilt collection. The banking hall was a dramatic venue for our initial installation, but the natural light which streams into the room - and highlights the magnificent architecture - was having a detrimental impact on the textiles."
Trish continues, "We are looking forward to 2011, when we will be presenting a new exhibition of the Esprit Quilt Collection in our museum's adjoining galleries - in partnership with Dr. Amelia Rauser and Art History students at Franklin & Marshall College. We believe that the student's innovative interpretation of the quilts and their relationship to the Esprit Clothing Company will attract a new audience to our museum, and inspire return visits."
In March 2011, the museum will also unveil a new interpretive exhibition in our Beaux Arts Hall. The inspiration for this installation - in the former Lancaster Trust Company banking hall - came directly from our museum guests, who were in awe of the architecture of the space and wanted to know more about its relationship to Lancaster City's nationally-significant historic district. The design of this exhibit will also allow flexibility for hosting special events, lectures, and other museum activities.
So whether you're planning a trip to Lancaster for the American Quilters Society (AQS) Quilt Show and Contest (March 16 - 19, 2011), or you simply appreciate the art, culture and craftsmanship of quilting, be sure to include a visit the Lancaster Quilt and Textile Museum in your itinerary. You won't be disappointed.
Be sure to ask your innkeeper for a disount coupon off admission to the Quilt and Textile Museum.
Also all you quilters attending the AQS Show and Contest, Authentic Bed and Breakfast Associaltion will be hosting a party for you on Thursday March 17.....stay tuned for more information. |

Area Attractions!
Even during winter months, there are so many interesting things to do in Lancaster County for the whole family! Here are some of our favorites, with links to their websites for full details...
Kids from 2 to 92 will love the fun and fascination of the Lancaster Science Factory. Their amazing collection of hands-on, interactive exhibits will keep you entertained (and learning!) for hours. When we first visited, we thought it was just for kids... but we soon realized we couldn't keep our hands off the various displays and experiments, and we left feeling much smarter than when we arrived!
If you'd like to stir childhood winter memories (or create new ones!), visit the Ice Park at Clipper Magazine Stadium. With baseball season still months away, this home of the Lancaster Barnstormers minor league baseball team is transformed into a winter playground, with outdoor ice skating and thrilling ice slides. It's great exercise, and fun for the whole family!
And even in the winter, a visit to Lancaster County just wouldn't be the same without a stop at Kitchen Kettle Village. A landmark in the village of Intercourse for over 50 years, its 40+ shops and charming atmosphere make it a delightful place to spend your day. And if sweet treats are your passion, be sure to stop by their Fudge Shop and Lapp Valley Farm ice cream!
