The Voice of Lancaster County
"When 're yous comin' with to Lancaster County, here nah?" The phrase "here nah" doesn't mean a whole lot, just something to dress up the end of the sentence when delivered in a melodic manner. Translation: When are you coming to Lancaster County? Like other regions of the U.S. such as the deep south or Louisiana's Cajun country, there's a distinct dialect to Lancaster County, often referred to as "Dutchy". Here are a few phrases to help you along when you encounter the locals!
A couple phrases found on gift shop potholders: "Throw Father down the stairs his hat!" and "Throw the cow over the fence some hay!". They're good demonstrations of the difference in grammar and word order in the local dialect. Neither father nor the cow are being thrown anywhere... thank goodness! A few restaurant phrases you may encounter: If you ask your waitress about the steak special and she says, "I'm so sorry, it's all." Translation: All gone. You're waiting for your breakfast to arrive and you hear, "Do yous want some coffee awhile? Translation: While you wait. And a couple more for good measure: "Don't forget to outen the light." Translation: Turn out the light. "What for chairs do you want?" Translation: What do you want those chairs for?
"The hurrier I go, the behinder I get ." Translation: I won'ner, could you figure that one out without the translation?!
And finally, from all the innkeepers in the Authentic Bed and Breakfast Association, a final phrase: When you come over - come out".
Translation: When you're in the area, drop by! |

Area Attractions!
There are so many interesting things to do in Lancaster County, it's nearly impossible to list them all! Here are some of our favorites, with links to their websites for full details...
This year marks the 300th Anniversary of the first permanent European settlers in Lancaster County in 1710. Lancaster Roots 300 celebrates the anniversary with events throughout the year. One of the highlighted attractions is the Hans Herr House in Willow Street, the oldest existing building in Lancaster County (1719). Come see how the earliest Mennonite settlers in Lancaster County lived and worked.

History abounds throughout Lancaster County, and no tour would be complete without a visit to the Ephrata Cloister. One of the earliest religious settlements in America (1732), this intriguing community is truly unique. From celibate members, to wooden blocks for pillows, this is a fascinating part of Lancaster County's religious history.

The Pennsylvania German culture of Lancaster County is delightfully on display at the Landis Valley Museum. Encompassing almost 200 years of heritage (1750 to 1940), this living museum is comprised of original and relocated structures in this 18th century crossroads village. They do a wonderful job of preserving and interpreting Pennsylvania German rural life in Lancaster County.
Watch for more attractions and activities in upcoming editions of our Authentic B&B Newsletter... and be sure to ask your Authentic innkeeper for discount coupons for all of our Partner businesses!

The Loft
One of the local treasures in downtown Lancaster is The Loft Restaurant on Water Street. The owner, Gunter Backhaus, a European Master Chef, has created a comfortable, cozy atmosphere that offers a complete dining experience. The menu contains such classics as Escargot, Smoked Trout and Frog Legs Provencale. The house signature entrée is Filet Mignon with Crab Imperial. There is something for everyone with an excellent selection of seafood, beef, chicken, pork and vegetarian dishes. The Classic Mushroom Soup is a perfect start. And the Buttermilk Battered Fried Oysters or Roasted Long Island Duckling is always a great selection for dinner. Friday and Saturday evenings, the Prime Rib is an excellent choice. You will have to get a doggie bag though!
Chef Backhaus is originally from Germany and his heritage is evident during October when he offers his special Oktoberfest menu. But his European influences are seen throughout all menus from the Weiner Schnitzel at dinner to the best Reuben sandwich at lunch! Dinner is offered Monday through Saturday from 5:30 to 9:00. Reservations are recommended. And lunch is offered Monday through Friday 11:30 to 2:00.
If you want to enjoy a quaint, local restaurant with excellent service and delicious food, check out The Loft in downtown Lancaster.

Pumpkin Harvest time and that means.....Warm Pumpkin Walnut bread from the kitchen. The recipe below makes three loaves. One to eat, one for gifting and one to freeze for a later date (if it doesn't get eaten) I like to make some sweetened cream cheese as well and serve it on the side.
Ingredients
3 cups pumpkin puree (fresh cooked and mashed OR canned)
1 1/2 cups vegetable oil OR applesauce for a lower fat version
4 cups white sugar
6 eggs 1 cup chopped walnuts
4 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 1/2 teaspoons ground nutmeg
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cloves
Directions
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour three 9x5 inch loaf pans.
In a large bowl, mix together the pumpkin, oil, sugar, and eggs. Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves; stir into the pumpkin mixture until well blended. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans.
Bake in preheated oven for 45 minutes to 1 hour. The top of the loaf should spring back when lightly pressed.
Sweet cream cheese Mix 8 ozs cream cheese with 3 TBS confectioners sugar. Blend well with a mixer until combined.
