Pottery Barn Kids is a great place to shop for bedding and other accessories for your child's room. I love this dinosaur sheet set! |
Themes are a great way to decorate a child's room. When you choose a character or hobby that your child likes, you know they will be sure to love their room. Here are lots of fun themes that will delight your child:
Dinosaurs
This easy theme can be created with dinosaur-patterned bedding and a simple dinosaur painting. Pull a light color out of the bedding for the walls, and display all of your child's dinosaur figurines on shelves around the room. This theme helps your child engage in history while he or she plays and rests.
Fairy Tales
Fairy tale rooms are filled with fantasy. Use soft, sheer fabrics on the windows, and create a canape for the bed. Walls can be painted with castles, unicorns, and fairies or you can use any number of wall decals to create the fairy motif in your child's room. For "fairy dust" in the room, include sparkly accessories and add glitter to your paint, or you can add glow-in-the-dark decals to the ceiling, making your child truly feel like she is in fairy-land when she goes to bed at night.
Under the Sea
There are many bedding sets and accessories for this theme. Paint the walls with vibrant scenes of life underwater. Raffia skirting makes a great dust ruffle for your child's bed. Use lamps that can be filled with seashells and create seashell streamers that can be hung from the ceiling throughout to create that under-the-sea vibe.
Jungle
Your child can go on a safari right in his bedroom. Use animal prints everywhere - in the bedding, on upholstered pieces, and in area rugs. You can mix zebra, tiger, leopard, and giraffe prints together. For whimsy, try prints in unusual colors, like purple zebra. Try using a large photo mural of safari animals to create a large-scale African motif.
Western
Accessories bring a western-themed room alive. Use a wagon wheel as wall art. Purchase cowboy boot table lamps. Choose denim fabric for the bedding, and include leather fringe everywhere. And don't forget to include a cactus - just don't have a real one unless it is placed high enough that your child won't get hurt by it!

Flowers
A flower theme is great for little girls. Color is what makes this room. Paint boldly colored flowers on the walls, use flower designed decals, and throw down a few flower-shaped rugs. Glue colorful fabric flowers on everything - window valances and lamp shades. For bedding, stripes are a wonderful pattern to coordinate with your flowers.
Sports
Primary colors are a great choice for a sports-themed room. Team pennants make fun wall art. There are loads of sports-themed accessories available, including lamps, shelving, rugs, and trunks. Cut out felt triangles to create a pennant window valance or purchase a custom roller shade for your child's window that is decked out with his or her favorite team's logo.
One thing to remember when decorating with a theme - don't go overboard. Not only is a subtle theme more attractive, but it will be easier to switch when your child grows out of it. And, using wall decals and hangable photo murals will be much easier to change out down the road as your little one changes his or her taste.
