Gabriel's Angels
July-August

2012

Greetings!

Gabriel's Angels is grateful to you for being a Volunteer!  Because of your desire to serve others you help us improve the lives of 13,000 at-risk children each year.

Our pet therapy program is growing and reaching more children on many levels. At this time of year our program is starting back up at our Head Start locations and alternative schools. We currently serve 85 facilities throughout Phoenix, including these new ones: Family Promise, Desert Heights Academy, 4 Success Schools, Golden Gate Head Start and Cartwright Head Start.  In Prescott, we are bringing healing pet therapy to The Boys and Girls Clubs of Prescott and Prescott Valley, Prescott Area Woman's Shelter, Yavapai Family Advocacy Center and the Prescott YMCA.

If you would like to explore being involved in our new Individual Intervention Program please email Kristi. This program is an opportunity for teams to work in a 1:1 setting with the child to help achieve predetermined treatment goals. Kristi will work with interested teams to provide education and training to prepare for this type of therapy setting. Our goal is to reach 42 children during the first year of the program. We welcome your inquiries.

We wish you an enjoyable rest of the summer creating awesome memories with family, friends and pets!

'A Teachable Moment'
by Debra Markert & Chelsea

Recently our therapy team, Debra and Chelsea, experienced a true life-changing event. During the many challenging days to follow, shining acts of love provided strength and momentum for this vibrant human-canine pair.

As a volunteer, you identify with the rewards of giving to others.

Debra & Chelsea are grateful for the circle of support and love that have surrounded them during Chelsea's injury and recovery.

This is their story

Happy Retirement!

Maria Cody and Ruby, her 12-year old Golden Retriever, have brought healing pet therapy to pre-kindergarten children at Homeward Bound for three years! When Maria announced Ruby's retirement, the children proclaimed their love and gave her a precious art gift.

Special memories for this team include watching the children grow in empathy, attachment and respect. Through activities from the ACT Kit, they enjoyed joining together in grooming Ruby and bathing her on water days!

Maria says, "Our volunteer opportunity with Gabriel's Angels & Homeward Bound have been a joy and blessing!"

Thank you and all our best, Maria & Ruby!

The Important
Core Behavior

Affiliation

One characteristic of healthy development is the ability to join in, contribute to and realize the benefit of being part of a group. The ability to affiliate allows children to join with other people to create a complex network of diverse give-and-take relationships. Children that have difficulties in groups tend to have problems with self-regulation and do not easily recognize or learn from social cues. They are often impulsive or immature, which makes other children avoid them and perpetuates a negative cycle because they have fewer opportunities to socialize. Pet Therapy allows a child to engage in a non-threatening environment with his/her peers and provides a much  needed opportunity for positive social engagement.
