Think You Know A Potential Pet Therapy Team or Helping Hand?
The first step toward becoming a Therapy Team or Helping Hand with Gabriel's Angels is to attend an Information Session. At this session, we provide more detailed information about the children with whom we visit and the process for becoming a registered Therapy Team or Helping Hand. We are hosting an hour-long Information Session at the Dusenberry-River Branch Library, River and Craycroft, 6:30 PM, July 19 and August 16.
To register, visit our website and in the events section, click on the date that works best for you. We will send you an email confirmation when you register, as well as a reminder email two days before the session. If you have a specific question or would like to talk more about volunteering, please contact Tucson Program Director Jan Hutchinson, at 520-425-6095 or via email. |

A great time was had by 300 guests plus pet therapy teams at the Unleash the Love breakfast held May 11 at the Doubletree Reid Park. A big thank you goes out to all the voluteers, supporters and guests who helped make the event a huge success, raising over $30,000 in support of providing healing pet therapy to help high risk and abused children in Southern Arizona. Special thanks also goes to our presenting sponsor, The Udall Law Firm, and participating sponsors National Bank of Arizona, Schaefer Design Group, ALTA Consulting, Veterinary Specialty Center and A Loyal Companion.

A Tale From A Pet Therapy Team
Harley and I met in August 2005, four months after my mother passed away. His capacity to listen, to care, to be silent but say so much just with his presence, was rejuvenating and I wanted to share that with others.
Harley was a two-time loser at the pound and on the E-list when I was introduced to him. Now he's a therapy dog and productive member of our pack.
On our visits to Juvenile Detention, I tell his story to nearly every group to remind them that second chances are rare and third chances still rarer and then encourage them to take advantage of them.
Teenagers were not our first choice for an audience, but that's where the most need was when we started with Gabriel's Angels. To my surprise, Harley has flourished.
There are several instances that stand out to me. One instance involved a teenage boy who was expecting good news and didn't get it. He was sitting in the front row and was called out of the group session to meet with his counselor. He left with a spring in his step and returned near tears. He returned and took his seat, struggling to keep it together. I asked him to hold Harley for me as I continued with my program. Harley went to him willingly, looking at the kids on either side, checking for treats. Harley turned to face him and then did something that I've never seen him do to anyone other than me: He kissed his tears away gently and nuzzled his neck. The boy was shocked. He let Harley lick him a few times on each side - smelly breath and all - and even cradled his head.
Then, suddenly, the machismo of a teenage boy re-emerged and he pushed his face away, hoping no one had seen what they had just exchanged. Harley turned around and gave him "the lean" and stayed with the boy for the rest of the session. For that short period, Harley had broken through and the boy had accepted tenderness and love that was given unconditionally..
If you wonder if dogs really can make a difference in the lives of kids in the cycle of violence, I hope our story - and the stories of every therapy team- will convince you that a dog can nurture a child's ability to love and trust and that this bond between a child and a dog is strong enough to break the cycle of violence.

Gabriel's Angels Joins Forces with
The First Tee Tucson for Golf Marathon
| | Gabriel's Angels Teams Get Ready to Golf |
Gabriel's Angels Board members and pet therapy teams had a great time while raising over $8,000 in funds by playing in a 100 Hole Golf Marathon held at the El Rio Golf Course earlier this year. Each participant committed to hitting 100 holes of golf in exchange for pledges of support for their efforts.
Thanks to the genrosity of the First Tee Tucson, Gabriel's Angels was able to use the Trini-Alvarez El Rio Golf Course for the event. The missions of our organizations mesh closely and we are very grateful for their support.
The First Tee Tucson was established in 2006 through the efforts of the Tucson Conquistadores, a local civic group. It's mission is to impact the llives of young people by providing learning facilities and educational programs that promote character development and life-enhancing values through the game of golf. The program is designed to identify children not served by existing programs, particularly at-risk young people. The goal is to teach and develop core values such as honesty, integrity, courtesy, and responsibility through golf.
For more information about how a child or youth group can participate in The First Tee Tucson program, visit their website or call 520-628-1555. For more information about next year's Gabriel's Angels 100 Hole Golf Marathon contact Betsy at Gabriel's Angels. |
