Catherine King
Catherine King is a very active woman. In her everyday work life, she's the Cape Cod outreach coordinator for Mass Rides, a program  of the state's Executive Office of Transportation that works with local employers to develop creative ways for people to get to work that minimize the all-too-common "one car, one person" approach.

Catherine King and Deval Patrick

Catherine graduated from CLI in 2004, and has been an avid supporter and advocate of the program ever since. She's always wanted to be a part of the board, and we're delighted to finally have her join us. Catherine says that CLI inspired her to serve her community in new ways, so she ran for the Dennis-Yarmouth School Committee, a post she's held for the past 3 years. From there, she chose to broaden her education, and is now at the half-way mark in a master's degree program in Public Administration at Suffolk University, which, thanks to an agreement with Cape Cod Community College, allows her to take her coursework right here at home. She's excited at how well-rounded the degree program is, having also exposed her to government issues and topics in Washington, DC, and even in Ireland.

A mother of three boys (12, 9 & 6), Catherine must have felt she wasn't already busy enough, so she volunteered to coach kids' soccer; on top of that, she now even plays in an adult soccer league. When I jokingly asked her what she did in her spare time, her face lit up as she told me of her love for music, her history as a singer, her early college work in music at Berklee, her love of reggae, and her current role as a "Reggae DJ," both in real life and on an internet reggae chat room. We welcome Catherine to the CLI board, and are inspired by her accomplishment, her talents and her commitment to service.

The Nature of Leadership:
Creating Space for Innovation

Whenever I want to learn something new about leadership, I start by thinking about great leaders, about great companies, about great books - and then I turn the other way. For years, I've found most of my leadership lessons out there in nature. Here's a snapshot of how I see it, twisted into a lesson on how nature creates space for innovation - one of the keys to great leadership.

Nature has a pretty impressive resume: over four billion years of sustainable excellence, without a hint of stress. How does she do it? She must have learned early on (oh, perhaps only three billion years ago) that fighting with her own process as a way to achieve results didn't leave a lot of winners around; so she chose a different tack. She decided to open millions of "conversations for possibility" all at the same time, then just listen to the natural feedback inherent in the conversations as the guide for her next steps.  In times of relative calm, she chooses replication as her strategy, simply making more of whatever "works." When things get a little crazy, like after a storm, she chooses improvement as a strategy, starting with what works and making it a bit better. And after heavy-duty turmoil, such as glaciations, volcanic explosions and tidal waves, she steps in with innovation, starting with "what isn't" and creating something entirely new.

Creativity is the lifeblood of innovation, whether in nature, business, or our own lives. Creativity demands open space, freedom, and acceptance of the unknown. Those things come from trusting the process, a place where nature excels. I can't help wondering how much better we'd be as leaders if we were able to slow down, see "what is," and then step into "what isn't" with trust, enthusiasm and creative spirit.
