A Commemoration Celebrating the Baptisms of Manteo and Virginia Dare Making History in the New World
The Episcopal Diocese of East Carolina opens its arms to all people to
join in an opportunity to reflect on and celebrate this state's
history. "The Commemoration of the Baptisms of Manteo and Virginia
Dare at the Lost Colony" is a free celebration that will be held at the Waterside Theatre in
Manteo, NC on August 17th. This celebration will be at 3 p.m. with a
reception afterwards.
The history of North Carolina undoubtedly begins on Roanoke Island with the mystery of the Lost Colony. It raises many questions about the start of English settlement into the "New World." What happened? Where did the settlers go? It is a mysterious piece of our history. But the significance of the Lost Colony spans farther than its disappearance. In August 1587 two significant events took place in the same week. These events were the baptisms Manteo (a Native American) and Virginia Dare. Manteoʼs baptism was the first recorded baptism of the Church of England in North America; Virginia Dareʼs baptism marked the baptism of the first child born to English settlers on the North American continent. Not only is this event important to those in the church, but it is an important piece of our culture, racially and historically. "This is the heritage of our state," said the Rt. Rev. Clifton Daniel. "This baptism marked a peaceful beginning to multi-cultural relations in North America. A commemoration of this event allows us as a people to reflect on this beginning and the changes that have shaped our nation and shed light on the challenges we face today."

Time for Camp Fun...
The Trinity Center "Family Fun and Camp Reminiscence Day" event is open to all parishioners of the Diocese of East Carolina.
The event will take place on the beach side, beginning at 3PM, Sunday August 24. We will have use of the Morgan Beach House, the Pavilion and of course the beach! Games for children and youth will be available. Story telling by former campers from Oceanside, Leach and Trinity will be held in the Pavilion. The Rev'd John Tol Broome will be a special guest relating his tales of the "doohammer" from Camp Leach.
Trinity Center will provide a "camp style" supper at 5 PM at a cost of $5 per person [or $20 for a family of four or more]. Unfortunately, the fire department will not allow any fires on the beach, but following the meal we will have a simulated camp fire either on the beach or in the Pavilion with singing and more stories. We will end our Family Fun and Camp Reminiscence Day event with Evening Prayer.
Space is available for anyone who wishes to spend Sunday night at Trinity Center. Please contact Chris Grenier at 252-247-5600 to make your reservation.
To have enough food for all who come, we are requesting that reservations be sent with a check for the proper amount to: Mamré Marsh Wilson, Historiographer, 302 Moore Street, Beaufort, NC 28516, no later than August 20, 2008.
The Diocese of East Carolina looks forward to seeing all on Sunday, August 24 for this special event.

And Camp Memories!
Camp Trinity, and its predecessor, Camp Leach, hold a special place in the hearts of many of the members of the Episcopal Church.
Bishop Daniel has asked that a database be created of all the people who have attended those camps in the past. If you have ever visited and spent any time at Camp Trinity or Camp Leach, please email the diocese your information.
We would like your name, current address, phone number, and email address. Emails can be sent to newsletter@diocese-eastcarolina.org.

What's New in the Diocesan News is up to you!
If your parish or committee is doing something that you are proud of? Mail it to newsletter@diocese-eastcarolina.org
This is a publication of the Episcopal Diocese of East Carolina. This newsletter may be reprinted in its entirety. |
From the Editor
Hello to all!
I have a bonus for you!
The Diocese is proud to say that it will be producing a quarterly print
magazine with the familiar name "Cross Current Magazine." It will run only a few times a year and will focus more on personal stories and less
on day-to-day news. Please feel free to send in any inspirational or
thought provoking stories or ideas that you would like to see published
in this magazine to newsletter@diocese-eastcarolina.org. Be sure to note in the subject if this news is for "The Monthly Current" or the "Cross Current Magazine."
And welcome to the new e-newsletter! I know, it looks just like the old one...but it has a few minor differences. I hope to keep the format the same for this newsletter, but - to save SOME confusion - I decided to change the name a little bit. Since we will be publishing a print-magazine called "Cross Current Magazine," I decided it would be best to change the name on the newsletter to "The Monthly Current." This will make it easier on everyone when referring to any news that we put out.
I would love to welcome all news and events that you would like to send! I will start, in the coming months, to put a calendar of some sorts in here so that everyone can send me events that they would like posted for other people to see. As always, your news is important and we want to help you share it!
Now....On to Diocesan News!
Just a reminder - the Lambeth Conference 2008 started July 16th. Bishop Daniel will be at this conference and will not return until early August. As we are currently (and as quickly as I can possibly manage) trying to get our website up, we cannot give you too much information about it. But, bear with us, and you will soon have access to what I think will be some really incredible information both from the conference, and from the Bishop himself.
Thank you for all your support and encouragement! Again, I entreat you to call on me for any help. Together, we can change the world!
Yours, Keri Dixon Communications Officer
