A Valentine from Verona

In this issue:

Love is in the air all year long in Verona but Juliet's balcony is not the only scene in "what light through yonder window breaks" upon the romatic landscape of Italy. Celebrating Valentine's Day in Italy is not a one day merchandizing campaign but a on-going affair with la bella vita.

Un Cuore da Scoprire

Verona - a city so famous for love that it gets thousands of letters simply addressed to "Juliet, Verona Italy. The week before February 14th is even more enchanting when the city celebrates un cuore da scoprire "a heart to discover" with a city-wide Valentine's Day market set up in the shape of a heart. There are concerts, events and the "Cara Giulietta" ("Dear Juliet") prize awarded on Valentine's Day to the author of the most heart-felt love letter received during the previous year.
Club di Giulietta

The Club di Giulietta (Juliet Club) is a group of volunteers that keep the romance of Juliet alive by answering letters that have been left for her in Verona for over 70 years. The tradition dates from 1937 when the first love letter was left on Juliet's tomb. There are 15 self appointed secretaries to Juliet who answer more than 5,000 letters sent every year. One letter found inspired the movie "Letters to Juliet".

Your Inner Romeo and Juliet

Follow the Shakespearean trail to No. 27 Via Capello where you can create your own balcony scene at Casa di Giuletta (the house of Juliet). In the courtyard there is a bronze statue of Juliet and legend has it that if you touch her well-worn breast, luck and good fortune will follow. Italians love this kind of mythology and my cousins highly recommended that the male members of our party give it a try. They did and we had a very nice time in Verona!

* Venice is less than an hour from Verona. The evocative city of shadows and lights, Venice has been called the Paradise of Cities. Compelling, elegant, a sumptuous banquet for the senses, La Serenissima  has one of the most instantly recognizable townscapes in the Western world, Piazza San Marco. Read about my relationship with a Venetian Doge.
Valentine's Day Graffiti

Graffiti in VeronaIn Verona thousands of star crossed lovers have written their names on the entrance walls to Juliet's house which at one time were completely covered with graffiti. It is a long standing tradition that is now confined to panels placed at the entrance with sticky notes and torn sheets of notebook paper replacing the graffiti. Although not completely condoned by the Italian establishment graffiti writing is actually encouraged during the Valentine's Fair in Verona
