Duomo of Milan

Milano

"My travels in Italy always begin in Milan. It is the home of my Italian cousins and although it doesn't have the historical familiarity of Rome or the landscape of a Tuscan hill town, Milan has a style all its own and it would be a pity to avoid spending time there"  from Seeing and Savoring Italy - A Taste and Travel Journey through Northern Italy, Tuscany and Umbria

More Italy Please - Milano, Mostarda and Beer

Just returned from my Annual Fall Buying Trip and even after 11+ years traveling in Italy by plane, train, car, bus, tram and a piedi (on foot) I'm still amazed by the food, wine, art and design of a country that leaves me wanting more. This year traveling by car from Milano, through the Bolognese Hills into the Val d'Orcia of Tuscany I realized that for me traveling to Italy was like visiting an old friend and sharing memories that only get better as time passes.

In the next few newsletters I'll share some of my experiences as I travel down Roman roads, past castles with Celtic altars and Etruscan ruins, through medieval walled cities, visiting Renaissance chapels and Gothic cathedrals into the kitchens, vineyards and orchards of princes, popes and everyday Italians developing a taste for Italy and wanting more.

Mostarda and Beer

I'm going  to begin with a stop near Parma. After leaving my favorite Italian outlet mall off the A1 Autostrada, I drove through the roundabout and down the street to the town's zona artiginale, an area on the outskirts of an Italian city where a particular industry is concentrated. As I was in Emilia Romagna, the particular industry was of course food.  But to my surprise the road less traveled not only led me to source an amazing apple mostarda for CosituttiMarketPlace but to Toccalmatto, an Italian microbrewery with some of the best beer I have ever tasted. Talk about off the tourist radar, you really have to know where you're going to find this place. But once you do - you'll be back. It's that good.

Birrificio Toccalmatto is in Emilia Romagna, Italy's Food Valley where the culinary and cultural traditions of food are at the heart of everything they do. So it wasn't surprising that the artisanal production of beer was done with the same respect for the ingredients that you see in the production of their artisanal pastas and legendary ragu'. On my visit I spent time with Alessio "Allo" Gatti who guided us through Toccalmatto's menu of beers. We got to go behind closed doors and walk among the production tanks to see and smell the brewing beer. Yes smell - the aromas were incredible. The aroma of hops was intoxicating and I hadn't even taken a sip of beer yet. With names like Skizoid, Rude Boy, Ambrosia and Fume du Sanglier, made with beechwood smoked malt, you know you're in for an adventure in taste.

My personal favorite is Sibilla, slightly spicy beer with a fruity aroma due to the strain of yeast used in the making. I'm anxious to try Surfing Hop, a dark red beer with the flavor of balsamico, after all this is Italy.
