Your Italian Experience Begins Here
Spring Cleaning

I actually like to clean.  There's something about tiding up your little corner of the world  . . . at least once a year that is very satisfying. The history and benefits of Spring Cleaning are tied to seasonal holidays and rituals that celebrate rebirth and new beginnings. Over the years cleaning your house became the ultimate rite of Spring. Whether Spring Cleaning is a symbolic rite to let the sunshine in or a biological urge to refreshen our lives, organizing our closets and dusting away the cobwebs seems particularly satisfying this time of the year.

I was once told that cleaning your house can be a meditative experience. The repetitive action of sweeping and dusting can lull you into a relaxed and calm state. That might be true if you're a Buddhist monk but that typically doesn't happen for me. So I try to find ways to make the job a little easier.

An Italian View of Clean Knight with Broom and Rubber Gloves

According to the cleaning mavens at Proctor and Gamble, Italian women spend 21 hours a week on household chores as opposed to Americans who spend just four. Italian women supposedly wash their kitchen and bathroom floors at least four times a week. American women just once.

On occasion Italians still hang their laundry out to dry and iron nearly all their wash, even socks and sheets. They don't understand our obsession with plug in "air fresheners" and don't believe that food odors are offensive. They open their windows to let the fresh air in even if they live in the cities.

Italians also spend time sweeping the sidewalks and streets in front of their entry ways and like to use traditional cleaning supplies, In Italy the Swiffer Wet Mop was such a flop that the company took it off the market.

The pleasing fragrance of olives has been part of the aromatherapy of Italy for centuries. The original "green product", olives and their pressed oil are used in cooking, cleansing and as a natural deodorizer for the home. The earthy green scent of olives stimulates the appetite, elevates the spirit and refreshens your home.
