Panettone & Pasta
For Christmas
Buon Natale Miei Amici

One of the greatest achievements of the country that brought us the Renaissance may be the legacy of tradition. Italians tend to be very traditional in their culture and customs especially around the holidays.

Christmas traditions, celebrations and foods that connect us to the past enrich our lives and are gifts to our families and friends that create lasting memories.

Panettone Tradizionale

PanettoneChristmas legends in Italy may not be as well known as the legends of rock and roll but they are equally as fascinating . . . and they all seem to center around food.

Like the legend of Panettone, the tall cylindrical fruit filled sweet bread from Milan that is an essential part of the Italian Christmas season. The legend begins with a larger than life character, Ludovico "il Moro" Sforza (1452-1508), Duke of Milan and  . . the story goes like this

Coxette Pasta

CroxetteCroxette, (corzetti) a traditional hand stamped pasta from Liguria is literally stamped with a legend. The making of one of Italy's rarest pasta begins with thin sheets of dough pressed between engraved wooden moulds to create disc shaped pasta with geometric shapes, flowers and medieval coats of arms. The Christian cross or "croxetti" was often used giving the pasta it's name.

Croxette is a celebratory pasta often served at weddings and festive occasions. But you don't need to wait for your next medieval banquet to serve croxette. I like to serve this unique artisan pasta with basil pesto anytime. Or if you're up to it, here's a recipe from Food and Wine Magazine for Corzetti with Veal Ragu' that would be the highlight of any holiday party.

This legendary Pasta is available at  CosituttiMarketPlace

New Traditions for the Holiday Season

Although Italians have deeply rooted holiday traditions that are part of their culture and heritage, the new generation of Italians are looking toward new traditions.  Most Italian women work outside the home today and the Nonna of the past is now running her own pasta business rather than making pasta at home. Italians like to relax during the holidays, they lack the intensity of the season finding enjoyment in the simple beauty of a country that needs no reason to celebrate the season other than the fact that Christ is born.

Create new holiday traditions with your family and friends
  • Pressured by holiday deadlines, send New Year's Cards instead of Christmas Cards to your friends, family and business associates
  • Concerned about the time and cost of holiday entertaining, have a "progressive Christmas dinner party" where each course is served at a different person's house to allow more time to enjoy your family and friends
  • Want to experience the traditional artisan foods of Italy with ease visit CosituttiMarketPlace and Bring New Meaning to What You Eat
  • Italians take time to relax and travel, often spending the entire month of August at the seashore or mountains; consider giving yourself the gift of travel this holiday season
