Taking Care of Mother and Baby the Natural Way
"A baby is God's opinion that the world should go on."~ Carl Sandburg
Last month our article was about changing childhood nutrition, but where it all really begins in is the womb--how you take care of yourself and your baby from the time you are pregnant through and after the birth. Read below for the best things you can do to give them a great start and boost their health from the very beginning. But there are things you can do from the time you learn you are pregnant through and beyond the delivery that can give your baby the best start. Taking Care of You During Pregnancy: - Eat organic whenever possible-Dirty Dozen and the Clean 15 on www.ewg.org. Pesticides act as estrogens in the body, taking up their receptor sites. This can greatly interfere with the hormone function that is so crucial to a healthy pregnancy.
- Get adequate protein-70 grams per day is recommended in the second and third trimesters. It is very important to fetal growth and development and helps manage blood sugar (a factor in mood and morning sickness). Great protein snacks are a hard-boiled egg, nuts, a few pieces of chicken, a smoothie or power bar.
- Take a good multivitamin-Extra demands on the body during pregnancy make it even more important to have a good base of nutrients to ensure that the cells can properly replicate. Many doctors give you a multi to take, but I found those very hard to digest. I like the whole food vitamins for their absorbability and ease of digestion.
- Avoid products with BPA-canned goods and plastics, including those that food are wrapped in. BPA disrupts hormone function.
- Get adequate DHA, a component of fish oil. It is crucial to healthy brain development, mood, and protection against postpartum depression.
- Use "superherbs" for pregnancy:
Nettles-Use the fresh greens, as tea, or in supplement form. It aids the kidneys (and thus helps with back pain), eases cramps and other muscle spasms, reduces hemorrhoids, relieves pain during and after delivery, prevents excessive bleeding with delivery, supports the healing of bladder infections, and is a great source of Vitamins A, C, D, & K and calcium, potassium, phosphorous, iron and sulfur! Red Raspberry Leaf-Available as a tea, this herb is great for toning the uterus to support the baby and easing childbirth. It helps with the relief of nausea and stomach distress and will prevent excessive bleeding after birth. It is rich in Vitamin C,K, E, calcium and iron. It is also rich in other minerals including phosphorous and potassium. Read more |
