 Getting Back in the Swing

With the kids back to school and summer coming to a close, we start to get back into our routines and that includes working on our health. In August we had a great kids program with lots of material on how to keep your big and little ones healthy during the school year. If you missed the event, stop by and ask us for some of this great information. We continue our theme on children's nutrition with our Mother and Baby article below. There is so much you can do in pregnancy and beyond to give your baby the best start possible.

Natural News You Can Use: Stanford Study on Organic Produce

Being that we live in an overly sensationalized society the headlines reported this: "Organic food no more nutritious than non-organic", "Organic food not healthier, study finds" and "Stanford scientists cast doubt on advantages of organic meat and produce". Here are the facts from the study:

  • The conclusion of the study was as follows: "The published literature lacks strong evidence that organic foods are significantly more nutritious than conventional foods. Consumption of organic foods may reduce exposure to pesticide residues and antibiotic-resistant bacteria."
  • The study found that non-organic meats were 33% more likely to contain bacteria that were resistant to several antibiotics. It also found that conventional produce had a 30% higher risk of containing detectable pesticide levels.
  • Environmental Working Group, a consumer advocacy organization, points out that the study is misleading. It used a few studies on children that showed that those on organic diets had significantly lower levels of insecticides in their urine than those eating a conventional diet. The real story is that these particular studies were looking at the insecticides most harmful to human health that target the nervous system. These chemicals have been linked to low birth weight, ADHD and hyperactivity and should be taken seriously..
  • Organic food does not allow genetically modified foods, chemicals in the form of sweeteners, colorings and preservatives, or rBGH. Non of these items were included in the study.
  • Researchers acknowledge that the studies were heterogenous, limited in number and that publication bias may exist, but disclose no conflicts of interest.

The headlines suggest that nutritional content is the only reason people choose to eat organic. As an organic buyer myself, I know that many times the choice is made not just for what the food INCLUDES, but also for what it EXCLUDES. Just for the record, there have been also been plenty of studies done that conclude that organic food contains more nutrients.

Evanston Works Together

Thanks to all Who Shopped to Support this Cause!

Evanston Works Together : 4 Tuesdays in August was a shop local, shop Evanston campaign benefiting clients at Connections for the Homeless and the YWCA Evanston/North Shore. The 27 retailers and restaurants participated by donating 5% of their sales from the four (4) Tuesdays this August to programs at Connections and the YWCA that help clients develop job skills and get back to work. Walsh gladly donated $444 of it's sales on the 4 Tuesdays toward these worthy causes.

Taking Care of Mother and Baby the Natural Way

"A baby is God's opinion that the world should go on."~
Carl Sandburg

Last month our article was about changing childhood nutrition, but where it all really begins in is the womb--how you take care of yourself and your baby from the time you are pregnant through and after the birth. Read below for the best things you can do to give them a great start and boost their health from the very beginning. But there are things you can do from the time you learn you are pregnant through and beyond the delivery that can give your baby the best start.

Taking Care of You During Pregnancy:

  1. Eat organic whenever possible-Dirty Dozen and the Clean 15 on www.ewg.org. Pesticides act as estrogens in the body, taking up their receptor sites. This can greatly interfere with the hormone function that is so crucial to a healthy pregnancy.
  2. Get adequate protein-70 grams per day is recommended in the second and third trimesters. It is very important to fetal growth and development and helps manage blood sugar (a factor in mood and morning sickness). Great protein snacks are a hard-boiled egg, nuts, a few pieces of chicken, a smoothie or power bar.
  3. Take a good multivitamin-Extra demands on the body during pregnancy make it even more important to have a good base of nutrients to ensure that the cells can properly replicate. Many doctors give you a multi to take, but I found those very hard to digest. I like the whole food vitamins for their absorbability and ease of digestion.
  4. Avoid products with BPA-canned goods and plastics, including those that food are wrapped in. BPA disrupts hormone function.
  5. Get adequate DHA, a component of fish oil. It is crucial to healthy brain development, mood, and protection against postpartum depression.
  6. Use "superherbs" for pregnancy:

Nettles-Use the fresh greens, as tea, or in supplement form. It aids the kidneys (and thus helps with back pain), eases cramps and other muscle spasms, reduces hemorrhoids, relieves pain during and after delivery, prevents excessive bleeding with delivery, supports the healing of bladder infections, and is a great source of Vitamins A, C, D, & K and calcium, potassium, phosphorous, iron and sulfur!

Red Raspberry Leaf-Available as a tea, this herb is great for toning the uterus to support the baby
and easing childbirth. It helps with the relief of nausea and stomach distress and will prevent excessive bleeding after birth. It is rich in Vitamin C,K, E, calcium and iron. It is also rich in other minerals including phosphorous and potassium. Read more
