Top 10 for Men: Supplements for Optimal Health
"Health is the core of human development."~Gro Harlem Brundtland
I've learned through my years in retail that men want information they can use in a quick, concise format. If they can read it quickly and it makes sense to them, they are sold! So here are the top 10 supplements that we recommend for men. Not that every man should take each and every one of them, but rather can pick and choose based on their particular needs.
Foundational supplements are those we would argue that almost any man should take on a regular basis and they are...
1) A Multivitamin fills in the nutritional gaps that we all experience. If you are on the go constantly, you may need this more than anything. Multivitamins can also be found that offer herbal support for issues like prostate health, heart health, energy production, or stress relief--sort of an all-in-one solution.
2) Fish Oil now has thousands of studies touting the benefits of adding omega-3 fats to your diet. These healthy fats help thin the blood, manage healthy cholesterol levels, keep the joints mobile, improve mood and focus, and more. Krill oil can also be used for these purposes and is preferred by some.
3) Probiotics are the healthy bacteria that live in the intestinal tract. They fight pathogens, increasing our resistance to disease, help us to digest our food, and enhance proper elimination. They are absolutely essential following a course of antibiotics, but almost anyone can benefit from them.
Depending on your particular situation, you may also want to take:
4) Saw palmetto is the number one herb for prostate support and is well-known for reducing the symptoms of BPH. Other herbs that improve the health of the prostate include pumpkin seed oil, pygeum, and lycopene. Combination formulas like Prostate Lx and Pros-T are very supportive for prostate health. Zinc is very important to the production of seminal fluid and testosterone.
5) Red Yeast Rice is a natural statin (i.e., used for reducing cholesterol) without the tremendous side effects of prescription statins. Like prescription statins, it does reduce the nutrient CoQ10 in the body, so CoQ10 must be supplemented along with it. Great combination formulas are available that include red yeast rice and other heart supporting nutrients like Choles-T, Pro Omega LDL, or Cholesterol Success.
6) Gingko Biloba is a great men's herb as it kills several birds with one stone. It improves blood flow to the small capillaries in the body and so can be helpful for circulation, erectile dysfunction, the eyes, and memory and focus.
7) Rhodiola, Ginseng, or Maca are in a class of herbs called "adaptogenic" herbs. These herbs are fortifiers of the body and help it react better to stress, as opposed to stimulants that ultimately cause a crash in energy. Russian athletes have used rhodiola to improve performance for years, while panax ginseng has been used for the same purpose in Asia. Maca is a Peruvian herb known for sexual and overall vitality.
8) Whey Protein is a great source of lean protein for men. It has been studied for its ability to help increase lean muscle mass and is great for recovery from a workout.
9) Glucosamine/Chondroitin or Tart Cherry Juice--Joint issues can be supported by glucosamine & chondroitin, which provides the material that joints are made of. Tart cherry juice removes uric acid from the body, which tends to build up in the joints (known as gout). It is great post workout to keep muscles from getting sore. Tart cherry juice is high in potassium so helps replace what is lost through perspiration and has melatonin to help with sleep. There are also many combination formulas available that combine joint building materials with anti-inflammatory nutrients and herbs like MSM or turmeric that can provide significant relief to sore joints.
10) Resveratrol or other Antioxidants--Resveratrol is found in the skin of red grapes and is a potent anti-aging nutrient. It has been shown in studies to inhibit the growth of several cancer cell lines and tumors. It also ramps up detoxification enzymes in the liver, and protects the heart and brain cells. Using the trans-resvertrol form is important. Other antioxidants can have similar effects including CoQ10, alpha lipoic acid, acai berry, pomegranate. Combination formulas are available that provide full antioxidant support as well.
The best thing to do is use a foundational program and add one or more of the other nutrients to support issues that you personally have. If you are on any prescription drugs that may conflict with herbs, you must check those for interaction. Your health needs to be maintained just like your car!
