Premium Skin Care Line Dr. Hauschka is on Sale!!Dr. hauschka

Known as the best in natural skin care for many years, Dr. Hauschka pioneered what is now a rapidly growing segment of the market.  People are becoming aware that the lack of regulation in the skin care market in the U.S. has led many companies to use unsafe, untested ingredients in skin care, and the public is just now focusing on this issue.  Dr. Hauschka has always used premium base oils and essential oils in its products and it complies with the much stricter standards of the BDIH, a European body that oversees the safety of skin care products.

About 40 chemicals have been banned from skin care products in Europe that are still allowed in the U.S.  Some of these chemicals are known carcinogens and disrupt hormone function. Dr. Hauschka is not an inexpensive brand, but is comparable in price to many department store brands.  At 20% off for the full month of November, it is a great deal! A Dr. Hauschka rep will be here on November 12th from 10:00 to 3:00 to answer any questions you may have about the company or what products are right for you.

Natural News You Can Use:
Resveratrol  for Anti-Aging

Resveratrol is a component of red wine, red grape skins, purple grape juice, mulberries and, in smaller amounts, peanuts.  Resveratrol is touted for its ability to prevent hardening of the arteries, decrease LDL (the "bad cholesterol"), increase HDL (the "good"), prevent cancer and promote anti-aging. Its anti-inflammatory effects are thought to be greater than that of NSAIDs, aspirin or ibuprofen.

Preliminary research has shown that it inhibits tumor growth. Resveratrol also appears to inhibit replication of the herpes simplex virus. Since resveratrol may have the same effect as anti-platelet drugs, it is recommended that you avoid taking both at the same time. Resveratrol may be very mildly estrogenic in its activity and while the estrogenic activity of resveratrol appears to be very low, it is best to avoid resveratrol if you have estrogen sensitive cancer/conditions...Read More

Chasing the Blues Away Naturally:

Supporting Mood With Brain-Boosting Nutrients

This human tendency to look for outer causes for our moods is the greatest addiction on the planet~Richard Rudd

I am shocked at the number of people that come into the store that are on anti-depressants or for whom they have been recommended.  Anti-depressants are now being given for mild depression, seasonal affective disorder (SAD), anxiety, PMS, pain relief, sleep issues, and more.  Not just adults, but many teens are also on medication for depression.

The trouble with antidepressants is that recent research is finding that they are relatively ineffective, create dependency (DO NOT go off of an antidepressant without talking to your doctor about a safe way to do it), can cause suicidal thoughts, and have serious potential drug interactions.  The April 2010 issue of Best Pills, Worst Pills, edited by Sidney Wolfe, M.D., cites a study published in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology involving over 3600 individuals looking at the connection between gastrointestinal bleeding and the use of antidepressants.  It found that SSRI's and SNRI's increased the risk of bleeding 1.2 to 1.9-fold, depending on whether the use of the drugs was past, recent or current. When used along with NSAIDSs or blood thinners the risk was 8-fold and when used with a combination of NSAIDs and aspirin, the risk was 28-fold.  Since antidepressants are now being prescribed for pain, concomitant use of these drugs may be quite common. As with most prescriptions drugs in our current "fix me" society, antidepressants are over-used.

Before going on an antidepressant, you might consider giving your brain the building blocks and nutrients it needs, and see if an improvement in mood follows.   I would submit that many of these individuals, especially the teens, are not anxious, depressed, or have SAD, but rather are malnourished.  It is difficult to imagine that people in the richest country in the world and some of the wealthiest suburbs in the country could be malnourished to the point of causing physical and mental issues, but the typical American diet does not provide many of the nutrients important to a healthy brain.  A healthy brain and brain tissue are crucial to neurotransmitter activity, which in turn is critical to mood.  It is true that the brain runs on glucose as its primary fuel, but many other nutrients like healthy fats, antioxidants, and certain vitamins are crucial to the structure and hence functioning of the brain.

Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil, flax, chia seeds, and to a lesser extent, hemp can be used as a source of DHA.  The brain is very rich in DHA, but DHA is not produced by the body and so must be taken in through the diet.  It is important to various functions of the brain including learning, memory and one's reaction to stress.  It has been found that pregnant women whose diets were high in DHA were less likely to suffer from postpartum depression.  Fish oils and other sources of DHA also provide an anti-inflammatory effect which can also be a culprit in mood or behavioral changes.    Since fish oils can also thin the blood and based on the information shown above relative to the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding, it would follow that high doses of fish oil used along with antidepressants may be a problem.

Another important fat for the brain is phosphatidylserine (PS), a phospholipid that can improve mood, anxiety and coping with stress.  It is present in every cell in the body, but is especially abundant in the brain.  It is a crucial building block for the cell membrane, making it important to nerve transmission. It enhances NGF (nerve growth factor), which helps manage nerve tissue and repair.  More than 40 human studies spanning 3 decades indicate that PS supports just about all brain functions that can be measured and it has garnered two Qualified Health Claims from the FDA.  It can be found from a soy source, so is plant-based.  It has also been studied in helping children with ADD.

Symptoms of a depletion of magnesium in the body include low energy, anxiousness, nervousness & irritability.  Magnesium is one of the most common mineral deficiencies in the U.S. because it no longer exists in the same concentration in our soil.  Magnesium is also required to metabolize alcohol, so alcohol does not help you de-stress, but instead worsens the problem.  It is also typical for magnesium to be temporarily depleted in the pre-menstrual phase, hence the increased irritability some feel during this time.  Since magnesium can have  a relaxing effect on the body, some use it as a sleep aid or to relieve constipation.  Supplementing with magnesium can alleviate nervousness, anxiousness and irritability.  A magnesium drink called Calm is a great way to take advantage of the benefits of magnesium.

Vitamin D is the "sunshine vitamin".  About 20-30 minutes of sun exposure can produce about 10,000 IU's of Vitamin D at one time, or the equivalent of 100 glasses of milk.  Serotonin levels as a result of summer sun are about twice that with exposure to winter sun.  This affects your mood.  The reported biological effects of Vitamin D on the nervous system include increased glutathione levels, also suggesting a role in brain detox pathways.  Those with diseases such as heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis typically have low levels of vitamin D and many of them are depressed.  Vitamin D is also very important to the functioning of the immune system.  The exact correlation of Vitamin D to a reduction in depression has not been established, but based on the above, you decide!

SSRI's block the uptake of serotonin, a feel-good neurotransmitter in the body, and through this mechanism increase serotonin in the body.  The amino acid tryptophan or its derivative 5-HTP are the building blocks of serotonin and work instead by promoting its production.  Vitamins B6 and B3 can also help in this process as they encourage the conversion of tryptophan to serotonin.  B3 in higher doses is also the basis of treatment of a variety of mental illness as outlined in a book called Ortho Molecular Medicine for Everyone by Abram Hoffer.  If B3 and B6 don't work, the issue could be a deficiency of one of the other neurotransmitters in the brain that affect mood, norepinephrine or dopamine.  B12 and folic acid are necessary for the synthesis for these two neurotransmitters.  A 2002 study of 4000 elderly adults backs this up; many of those who had depression symptoms also had B12 deficiencies. Since the B vitamins as a family are very important to the functioning of the nervous system and one's reaction to stress, a B-complex vitamin can go a long way toward promoting healthy neurotransmitter activity and improving the reaction to stress.

L-theanine is an amino acid derivative found in green tea. It has long been known to trigger release in the brain of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), which helps to filter out extraneous and distracting stimuli, thereby reducing anxiety.  L-theanine helps more with anxiety than depression for this reason. Synthetic GABA is not well absorbed by the body, so it is better to take l-theanine to boost levels of GABA instead.  You should not use l-theanine along with blood pressure drugs or with caffeine or other stimulants.

SAMe, S-adenosyl methionine, helps detoxify cell membranes and synthesize neurotransmitters. It is a naturally occurring molecule that is distributed throughout virtually all body tissues and fluids.   The mechanism for the antidepressant effect is unknown, but SAMe is associated with increased serotonin turnover and higher dopamine and norepinephrine levels.  SAMe also has pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effects, so may be a good choice for those who would consider using an antidepressant for pain relief.  SAMe may not be used with antidepressants.

Flower essences are a great way to deal with emotional issues that may be causing you depression, anxiety, or just general stress.  There is a flower essence for literally any emotional or mental issue you can come up with.  Two in particular called Illumine by FES and Lighten Up by Alaskan can help to ease depression that has a variety of causes including a family history of depression, depression caused by a loss, seasonal depression, or depression caused by a health crisis like surgery or birth.  Many other examples could be provided, but it is best to look at our reference books for the best match to your issues.

Although antidepressants may be necessary in certain situations. it seems that trying to nourish the brain first might take care of many of the mood issues that we experience.  Given the significant side effects of antidepressants, along with their apparent over-use, it would seem that an alternative should be explored in cases that are not severe or life-threatening.  I hope that the above will
