You may have heard recent news that eight companies that manufacture or market fish oils have been named in a California lawsuit brought under Proposition 65 and we want to give you the facts as we know them. Fortunately, none of the companies whose fish oils we carrry have been named in the lawsuit! It does, however, point out the need to use fish oils that have high purity standards and are independently tested.
Here is what we know: Eight dietary supplement manufacturers and marketers were named in a California lawsuit on March 2nd that alleges that some fish oil supplements have been sold containing illegally undisclosed and unnecessarily high levels of contamination with PCB's. The eight companies named are: CVS Pharmacy, Inc., GNC (General Nutrition Corp.), Rite Aid Corp., Now Health Group Inc., Omega Protein Inc., Pharmavite LLC, Solgar, and TwinLab Corp. While this group does include Solgar and TwinLab, who we generally consider to be very high quality supplement companies, it does point out the need to use companies who specialize in making fish oils.
The lawsuit alleges that each of the companies sold fish oil, shark oil, fish liver oil, and shark liver oil supplements that have PCB contamination above the so-called "safe harbor" limits set for human PCB consumption under California's Prop 65. Prop 65 (1986) was passed to force consumer products to eliminate toxic chemical ingredients or reduce them below published safe harbor limits.
.
We continue to recommend primarily Nordic Naturals and Carlon Labs fish oils, as we always have. We believe these companies offer the best quality fish oil supplements. Numerous studies have shown that fish oils have important benefits including brain, cardiovascular, joint and skin health, and can improve athletic performance.
