Natural News You Can Use: Walsh's Self Awareness & Development Class
Beginning this January, Walsh will be offering a series of classes on Self Development & Awareness. Classes will be held once each month and will be given by Linda Maratea, one of our staff. Our objective is to give you as individuals the tools you need to find your own unique path to health on all levels: spiritually, emotionally, mentally, and physically.
Your own health has many layers that are affected by your experiences, your environment, your constitution, your family genetics and your nutritional needs and habits. We will be covering a variety of topics that will help you learn how to take control of your health in your own unique way.
Linda has extensive training in many aspects of spiritual growth, has assisted people with their health here at Walsh for 6 years, and is a flower essence practitioner. Her classes will include a guided meditation, lecture on the topic of the month and time for questions and answers. The cost will be $10 per class. People may attend any or all of the classes, but we strongly encourage you to come to the first class if possible, as that will be the basis for all of the others.
The first three classes, to be held the 3rd Tuesday of each month starting in January, will be as follows:
January 19th--Where are YOU on Your Path to Self Awareness?
This first class will be the most important, so if you plan to attend any future classes, please make this one! Linda will guide you through a personal inventory using a questionnaire and other self-assessment tools as the basis for your growth going forward.
February 16th--Using Numerology to Decipher Your Own Code
Developed by Pythagoras, the father of modern Math, this system uses numbers to help inidviduals discover their own unique talents, challenges and the energies affecting you right now.
March 16th--The Nutritional You
Taking care of the physical body is the first step to taking care of the whole you. If you don't feel good you are unlikely to make real progress on other levels. Learn about your own nutritional needs and how you can feel better quickly.
If you have an interest in attending any one or a series of these classes or have any questions, please contact Linda Maratea at lindam567@yahoo.com. We would like to get a feel for the level of interest and see if Tuesdays will work for those interested.

Feature Article: Follow Your Nose to Health--Aromatherapy Soothes the Senses
Smell is a potent wizard that transports you across thousands of miles and all the years you have lived. --Helen Keller
Did you ever think about how a certain scent can transport you back in time, right to the very place where you first experienced it? Or how the smell of apple pie brings your grandma right back to you? Scent can actually affect the body and the mind in more than just a pleasant way. Aromatherapy can have a powerful effect on your physical and emotional well-being. Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils extracted from aromatic plants for medicinal purposes. The oils can be present in various parts of the plant, like the leaves, seeds, flowers, roots, and bark. Steam distillation is one of the most common methods for extracting the oils from the plants. If done properly, it will retain the character of the oils in their full potency. Aromatherapy uses therapeutic-grade oils and is not to be confused with perfume. Ancient cultures actually made perfume from authentic essential oils, but modern perfumes are generally chemical imitations of the real thing. In fact, any skin or beauty product that lists the term "fragrance" without specifying what the fragrance comes from is a chemical imitation, or has chemical boosters to "stretch" the scent. These boosters often include dangerous chemicals like phthalates that are known endocrine system disruptors. The quality, purity and authenticity of essential oils should be of prime importance to anyone using them to achieve a desired effect. The quality starts with the plants themselves. The plants must be strong, healthy, and thriving in their natural habitat. They must be harvested at the correct time of year and even the correct time of day. The best extraction process needs to be determined for each type of plant. Exposure of the oils to electromagnetic machinery should be avoided, assuring that their specific chemistry is retained. The oils must be carefully stored--bottled in glass and protected from heat and light. Essential oils made with these methods will be higher in price, but far better in quality. Quality essential oils are very concentrated and a "less is more" attitude should be adopted when using them. I once sprinkled multiple drops of Oshadhi's Calm & Secure combination blend across my family room before leaving the house. My goal was to keep my dog calm during a bad thunderstorm, but I ended up smelling the poor girl out of the place. Once I arrived home I realized I had over-done it and the smell actually nauseated me. Since the oils are very strong, diffusing them into the air is not recommended if you have cats or other small animals around the house (thank goodness I have a large dog!). Certain natural chemical constituents of essential oils including phenols and ketones can be hazardous if used incorrectly. Phenols are powerful antiseptics and bactericides and oils containing them should be used in small amounts for short periods of time. Some oils that have phenols are basil, clove, oregano and thyme. Ketones are cell regenerative and break up congestion and fats. They may have safety considerations and so should be used in small amounts and not during pregnancy. Some oils that have ketones are sage, cedar leaf, peppermint and fennel. Oils can be very potent so should always be kept out of the reach of children and away from the eyes. Pure, undiluted oils can be kept for years if they are properly stored in a cool, dry place and kept tightly capped. Oxidation is the most common way for oils to go rancid and using these storing methods can keep oils from oxidizing. The cool thing about essential oils is that they can be used in a variety of ways. You can disperse the aroma with a diffuser that has a cool stream of air or a gentle warming of the oil. Oils can also be directly inhaled from the bottle. If the oil is not too strong, you can put a few drops on a cotton ball, put it in a baggie, and open it to sniff it when you need it. The oils will retain their potency for about a week this way. Eucalyptus, an oil that is great for opening the airways, is one that works well this way. Some oils can be applied directly to the skin, but make sure you check a knowledgeable source before you do this. One oil that can be applied directly to the skin is Rosa Rubiginosa, an excellent oil for taking fine lines out of the skin and generally tonifying mature skin. More commonly, oils are diluted in a carrier oil such as grapeseed, jojoba, almond, apricot kernel, or coconut. It is important to use a high quality oil as you will also get benefits to the skin from that. The diluted oil can then be used for massage, a chest rub, foot rub, or as body oil. Oils can also be used in the bath, sauna or even as a foot bath. I have a friend who uses the citrus oils in his steam shower as a good wake-up for the morning. Many of the oils can also be used as perfume, or you can choose from one of Oshadhi's natural perfumes. The best thing about the oils is they have therapeutic properties in addition to their beautiful, comforting scents. Below are some common conditions and the oils that are recommended for them. Fortunately, several different oils can be used for the same purpose, so you can choose one that smells good to you. Antivirals-Tea tree, Ravintsara, Thyme, Cinnamon Bark, Clove Bud, Eucalyptus, Lemon, Lavenders, and Bay Laurel. The Cold & Flu Care combination is also great. Best used via foot massage, chest rub, or diffusion. Antibacterials-Oregano, Thyme, Eucalyptus, Clove bud, and Cinnamon Bark. Best used via foot massage, chest rub, or diffusion. Stress Relief-Bergamot, Chamomiles, Lavenders, Sandalwood, Neroli, Rose, Clary Sage, Frankincense, Firs, Ylang Ylang, Cedar, Geranium, Jasmine, Orange Sweet, Patchouli, Basil, Black Spruce, Vanilla, or Vetiver. Some great combination oils for stress are Anxiety Rescue, Balancing, Meditation, Peace & Quiet, Peace of Mind, and Stress Relief. Best used via massage, bath, diffusion, or direct inhalation. Fatigue-Rosemary, Black Pepper, Eucalyptus Globulis or Radiata, Lavender Stoechas, Peppermint, Black Spruce, Ginger, Tea Tree, Lemon, Pines, or Thymes. Best used via massage, diffusion or inhalation. Muscle/Joint Aches-Chamomiles, Rosemary, Lavenders, Black Pepper, Ginger, Pine, Carrot Seed, Clove Bud, Firs, Eucalyptus, and Vetiver. Best used via massage or compress.. Grief or Loss-Rose, Vanilla, Bergamot, Frankincense, or Neroli. Best used via foot bath, massage or direct inhalation. Motivation-Rosemary, Clove, Tea Tree, Thyme. The combos Citrus Grove, Morning Motivation and Prosperity will also get you going. Best used via foot bath, massage, or direct inhalation. Skin Care-Lavenders, Chamomiles, Geraniums, Rose, Neroli, Sandalwoods, Frankincense, Ylang Ylang, Carrot Seed, Jasmine, Patchouli, Orange Sweet, Vetiver, Rosa Rubiginosa. Best used via massage, body oil, compress, added to skin care products, or added to bath. Mental Clarity/Concentration-Great for keeping you productive at work or diffusing in your house during homework time. Basil, Peppermint, Rosemary, Lemon, Eucalyptus Globulis, or Thyme. A great combo oil is Clarity, which has helped me tremendously with studying. Best used by direct inhalation or diffusion. Congestion/Coughs-Eucalyptus, Rosemary, Pines, Tea Tree, Lavenders, Firs, Peppermint, Basil. The combo Cold & Flu Care is also great. Best used via diffusion, chest rub or direct inhalation. Women's Hormone Balance-Geranium, Clary Sage, Lavenders, Frankincense, Bergamot, Jasmines, Rose, Ylang Ylang. The combo oils Woman's Balance, Enchantment, or Balancing would also be useful. Best used via massage, bath or diffusion. This is just a sampling of some of the physical and emotional issues that essential oils can help with. The best way to approach the oils is to come in and sample them. We have testers of all of our essential oils. I think you will find an oil that satisfies your nose and gives you other benefits as well. If you are an essential oil neophyte, try one of the more common oils like eucalyptus or lavender. You can see from the above that those oils have multiple properties, so almost anyone can benefit from them in some way. November is the perfect month to try out an oil as all of our essential oils are 20% off this month. Oils make a great holiday gift too! |
