Natural News You Can Use: The Miracle of Pine Bark Extract (Pycnogenol)

Since I have been reading a lot about pine bark extract (pycnogenol) recently, I thought I would pass the information on to you.  Pine bark extract is a natural plant extract originating from the bark of the French maritime pine tree, which grows exclusively along the coast of southwest France.  The trees are grown entirely without pesticides and extracted with non-toxic solvents.

Pycnogenol has four main properties that make it helpful for cardiovascular and circulatory health, joint health, skin health, eye health and sports nutrition:
  • It is a powerful antioxidant
  • It is anti-inflammatory
  • It aids in the production of nitric oxide, helping to dilate blood vessels
  • It binds to collagen and elastin
Pycnogenol has been found in recent studies to reduce pain from osteoarthritis, mainly due to it's anti-inflammatory effects.  It also lowers C-reactive protein, an inflammatory marker.  It promotes the production of nitric oxide in the blood, dilating blood vessels to improve circulation.  It also reduces LDL and increases HDL.  Recent studies have also found it to be helpful in the treatment of ADHD because it lowers adrenaline, improving symptoms of hyperactivity.

Pycnogenol is on the FDA's GRAS (generally recognized as safe) list and has been tested for safety and efficacy in over 80 studies.

Feature Article:  Bugs Be Gone!  And Other Ideas for a Healthy Summer

What is one to say about June, the time of perfect young summer, the fulfillment of the promise of the earlier months, and with as yet no sign to remind one that its fresh young beauty will ever fade.  ~Gertrude Jekyll

One of the incredibly unfair things about living in the north is MOSQUITOES!!  I sometimes feel that God doesn't like us here--I mean, we plow through these horrendous winters and then have bugs to contend with all summer long.  Our fair skin can be a problem too.  So what's a northerner to do?  Get out your natural arsenal and defy those things that would try to ruin our precious good weather and get outside!

Get the Bugs Out!

There is no need to resort to the likes of DEET or other chemicals when nature gave us many good bug repellents that we can use to keep critters away.  Here are our top suggestions for keeping the bugs at bay:
  • B-vitamins--particularly B-1.  The bugs don't like the smell given off by your skin when you take these vitamins.  People with allergic reactions to bug bites could especially benefit from taking this.  The side benefit is less stress as B vitamins are great stress busters.
  • Natural bug spray, lotion or towelettes--If someone says you need DEET to effectively repel bugs, it just isn't true.  Nature has its own defenses, namely the essential oils peppermint, lemongrass, geranium, eucalyptus, citronella, and cedar.  All of our bug sprays have one or a combination of these oils and are very effective.
  • Use a Bug Band--If you don't like the feeling of a spray or lotion all over you, a great alternative is a bug band.  Just slip one around your wrist and/or ankle to keep the bugs away.  Some of my gardener customers have tried them and said they worked great!  The active ingredient is geraniol from geranium and they are good for 120 hours of use.
  • Don't wear dark clothing--Dark clothing, particularly black, attracts mosquitoes and other bugs, so wearing lighter colored clothing will keep you more comfortable.
  • Scent yourself properly--If you are going to use scented soaps, lotions or perfumes, make sure they have essential oils that repel bugs in them.  Plantlife makes delicious-smelling geranium, lemongrass, and mint soaps and also a lemongrass body lotion.  Luv a Dub has a geranium soap that will make you smell wonderful to yourself but not to the bugs.  You can also use a couple of drops of any of the appropriate essential oils in your own unscented lotions.  Oils could also be applied directly to the skin, but you would want to test for sensitivities first.
  • Don't eat bananas but do eat garlic--Bugs love sweet smelling bananas, so too many of those in the summer is bad for keeping the bugs away.  On the other hand, they don't like garlic, so serve lots of garlicky appetizers at your next backyard barbecue.
  • Use candles scented with bug repelling essential oils or diffuse oils at your next outdoor event--We have a candle called Bug-Free Bliss that is a great combination of all of the oils that fight bugs.  It is soy rather than petroleum-based, burns long and should help keep bugs away from you while out on the patio.  You can also diffuse any of the above-mentioned oils in your outdoor space while you are outside enjoying.  Makes a great hostess gift for a summer party!
  • If you are having a party, National geographic recommends a product by Planet Naturals called Mosquito Beater Spray, also a combination of the above oils.  You can find it at www.planetnatural.com/site/mosquito-spray.

To Sun or Not to Sun?

There is perhaps a little bit too much paranoia about the sun in this country.  The sun is not evil, and in some ways can be beneficial.  It is responsible for helping the skin make vitamin D, which has a host of benefits like better mood, cancer protection, better immunity, and stronger bones.  The key is to be smart about the sun.  It's true that living in the north, we may be more susceptible to burning since we are not used to the sun in the way that our southern counterparts are.  Burning our skin is the real problem when it comes to skin cancer.  So what is recommended?

For all that I have read about the topic, plus just a little good common sense, I would say this:
  1. A moderate amount of unprotected sun exposure, 20-30 minutes of mid-day sun three or four times per week is good for most people.  If you get sun poisoning or have extremely fair skin, you may not be able to do this.  The point of getting mid-day sun is that is when the UV-B rays are at their peak.  UV-B rays are what vitamin D is made from.  If you are going to be in the sun all day, by all means use a natural sunscreen to reduce your exposure and avoid burning.  An SPF of 15 is adequate for most people.
  2. The best natural sunscreens have as their active ingredients physical blocks, not chemical ones.  The most common physical blocks are titanium dioxide, PABA, and zinc oxide.  Chemical blocks include things like oxybenzone, octinoxate, homosalate, avobenzone, and others.  The concern with chemical blockers is that they seep into the skin and can have undesirable effects.  Most of the drug store brands have chemical blocks and are poorly rated by the Environmental Working Group (www.ewg.org), which rates skin care products based on safety.  Physical blocks reflect the sun and are not as well absorbed into the skin.
  3. The sun does cause damage to the surface of the skin via oxidation, so you will get some aging of the skin from sun exposure.  This can be alleviated by taking an antioxidant formula when you will be exposed to the sun for longer periods of time (i.e on vacation or in the summer) and/or using a sunscreen that has antioxidants in it.  Some of our formulas have green tea extract, grapeseed oil or vitamin E in them, all good antioxidants.  Protecting the face is probably the most important, and Aubrey has some nice moisturizers that have a 15 SPF.
  4. Children's skin, especially babies, is much thinner.  It is even more important for them to use a natural sunscreen than it is for adults because chemicals can harm their development.  Their skin is more porous than adult's skin.  California Baby, which we now carry,  is a brand that has been recommended by some doctors and also by ewg.org, an organization that rates natural skin care products based on the safety of the ingredients.

Energy and Hydration

The simplest solution to staying hydrated is, of course, to drink lots of filtered water.  You can also add certain nutrients to your water if you will be out in the heat for long periods of time.  Emergen-C makes quick nutrition easy with their packets that add a strong shot of vitamin C and other nutrients to help you re-hydrate, keep your muscles flexible, and boost your energy.  I especially like their Electro-mix, which replaces needed electrolytes and is an excellent substitute for Gatorade or other sugar-laden sports drinks.

Greens formulas are great for anyone on the go in the hot weather.  Add them to a smoothie or your favorite juice for an alkalizing, energizing, shot of nutrition.  Many boast 20 or more fruits, vegetables and grasses that will help you meet your five-a-day fruit and vegetable requirement.  A great alternative to eating and drinking all of the bad food that is available at so many summer events (think fairs of all kinds).

So go have yourself a sun-safe, happy, bug-free summer the natural way.  Those chemical bug sprays that kill bugs fast can't be so good for you either.  Remember that the sun can be good for you as long as you keep from burning.  And stay hydrated!
