Time to Cleanse Your Body!!
Periodically cleansing your body is like changing the oil in your car: it is the least expensive way to make sure that your body runs efficiently. The advent of spring is the perfect time to cleanse as the body releases toxins more easily in the spring (they are stored in our fatty tissues). During winter, the body's natural tendency is to hold onto fat to keep us warm.
If the body senses that a release of toxins can be handled by the environment in the body, then it will let go of the fat more readily. A cleanse will purify your body's environment and make it ready to process the toxins that will be released. Cleansing and weight loss can go hand in hand for this reason. To learn more about why we cleanse and how we might feel while doing one, see our article below "Cleansing is the Body's Oil Change".
Cleansing is also a way to help the body handle the airborne allergens that can be so prevalent in springtime. Please join Dr. Connie Catellani at the store on March 11th for a talk on natural ways to heal allergies and asthma (details below).

Natural News You Can Use: One More Reason to Lose Weight the Natural Way
The FDA is adding 41 products to an alert about tainted diet pills, bringing the total to 69. Michael Levy, director of the division of new drugs and labeling compliance, said that the FDA has been buying diet products and testing them for undeclared drugs after receiving complaints about side effects. Criminal charges may be filed in some cases.
Drugs that have been found in diet pills include the following:
- Sibutramine, the active ingredient in the FDA-approved drug Meridia. It can cause seizures, heart attack or stroke.
- Rimonabant, the active ingredient in Acomplia, a diet pill that failed to win FDA approval and has been withdrawn from the market in Europe.
- Phenytoin, an anti-seizure medication, and phenolphthalein, a suspected carcinogen
Most of the offending products come from China, but not all. Beware of pills that promise a "silver bullet" approach. If it sounds too good to be true it probably is. If you are trying to lose weight, see us here at Walsh for some natural solutions that help with fat burning, appetite control, detoxing, and balancing the blood sugar, a huge culprit in cravings. But you'll have to do some work too!!

Feature Article: Cleansing Is the Body's Oil Change
Oh Beautiful for smoggy skies, insecticided grain, For strip-mined mountain's majesty above the asphalt plain. America, America, man sheds his waste on thee, And hides the pines with billboard signs, from sea to oily sea. ~George Carlin
Although the above quote is not particularly funny it does unfortunately accurately portray our mistreatment of the planet and the resultant level of toxins that each of us has to deal with on a daily basis. There are currently 85,000 chemicals registered worldwide and only half of these have been tested for toxicity to humans. One need only look as far as our friends and relatives to see that the incidence of such health issues as cancer, Alzheimers, ADD, IBS, Crohn's disease, autoimmune diseases, hormone imbalance, allergies, asthma and more have gone up dramatically in the last two decades. The National Cancer Institute estimates that environmental toxins are responsible for 80-90% of all cancers. Not bad genes, bad habits or bad luck, but the simple fact that our bodies can no longer handle the mess we have made of the environment.
Four billion lbs. of pesticides are used annually in the U.S., more than 10 lbs. per person! DDT, a pesticide banned in the U.S. in 1972, is still routinely found in the tissues of animals, birds, fish and humans and in remote corners of the earth like the Arctic. Bisphenol A, a chemical found in plastics like those used in baby bottles, has been the target of environmental groups like EWG for years and was recently banned in Canada. Most people have seen the press about RBGH, which companies have begun to ban from use in their products. Yoplait, Starbucks, and Dannon, to name a few. There will be more and more of these that come to light and it is our job as consumers to make sure these poisons are not in our food or our environment.
Toxins are of two types, those that come from inside the body and those that come from outside. Those from inside the body are by-products of normal metabolic processes and ridding the body of these is part of normal metabolism. Those from outside the body are not just ingested, but are also inhaled and taken in through the skin. Outside toxins can be found in milk and other animal products, pesticides, household cleaners, prescription drugs, plastics, our water, and skin care products. An estimated 95% of chemicals used in synthetic fragrances (which are abundant in toiletries, perfume, cologne, and skin care products) are derived from petroleum. These derivatives can cause birth defects, central nervous system defects, and allergic reactions.
What can we do?
Our bodies are subjected to a constant barrage of toxins each day, yet few of us are doing anything about it. We go along without symptoms and assume we are okay until one day we are not. Just as our cars need an oil change, our bodies need to be maintained as well. One great way to do that is to periodically cleanse the body. The toxins in our body are typically stored in our fatty tissues and can remain there for years if we don't make an effort to clean them out every so often. How often we should cleanse is debated, but most experts suggest from 2-4 times per year. It is also generally recommended to cleanse for a period ranging from 7 days to one month. I have just started a spring cleanse myself.
The advent of spring is a great time to cleanse as the body is renewing its tissues and getting ready for new growth. I'm sure you've noticed how kids have a big growth spurt in the spring. As adults we don't (hopefully) grow larger, but our bodies are continually renewing themselves and this activity peaks in springtime. A cleanse is a great way to jump-start a weight loss program as our body gets ready for this spring renewal. Since most of the toxins in our body are held in the fat, getting rid of the toxins will also help us let go of the fat.
Cleanses are of three main types: herbal, homeopathic, and fasting. Fasting cleanses usually involve either no food or just fruit and vegetable juices along with the cleansing nutrients. The "lemonade diet" is one example. While some sources feel this is a good method of cleansing, its detractors point out that one very big problem with it is that there is not enough fiber to carry the toxins out of the body, and so they can be reabsorbed. If you choose to do a fasting cleanse, doing it very short-term (3-5 days) would be wise. We do offer a powdered version of the "lemonade diet" by Vibrant Health, a convenient way to do this diet without having to prepare the liquid each time you take it (6-8 times per day).
There are several good herbal cleanses on the market, which focus on the herbs that promote the release and proper processing of toxins. While many people think of these as strictly colon cleanses, they do in fact work on many different channels of the body to ensure that toxins are removed. The bowels are one of the primary ways to ultimately release toxins, but the kidneys also play a major role, as well as the lungs, the skin, the blood and the lymphatic system, to a lesser extent. The liver is the organ that actually performs the detoxifying. The cornerstone herbs to any cleanse are milk thistle, dandelion, and burdock root. Because milk thistle is such a potent detoxifier of the liver, it can actually clear prescription drugs too quickly from the system. This fact, combined with the need to check drug-herb interactions whenever you are taking prescription medication, would rule out an herbal cleanse for those on multiple prescription drugs. If you are on a single drug, you should consult your doctor before using an herbal cleansing formula.
A homeopathic cleanse may be more appropriate for someone on prescription drugs since homeopathic medicines do not interact with drugs. There are some great homeopathic cleanses by HVS that start with a basic Organs and Systems formula. You can then move to ridding the body of specific toxins such as pollution, fungi and yeast, metals, radiation, etc. with a second formula. Homeopathic cleanses contain mainly the energy of the substances used to detox the body rather than the actual molecules, and so can be safer concurrent with the use of drugs. Still, it is best to check with your doctor. Understanding the Body's Detoxification Process
The liver is the main detoxification organ of the body. Toxins are transferred to the liver by the blood and the digestive tract for processing in two phases. Phase I involves more than 100 different enzymes collectively known as cytochrome P450 that convert toxic chemicals to an intermediate form. That intermediate form is further processed in Phase II. The potential problems with the first phase are that 1) a large amount of free radicals can be produced by the process 2) the system can be over-loaded by exposure to alcohol, caffeine, and other toxins and 3) if toxins are not further converted in phase II they will be reabsorbed into the system. The best way to ensure that Phase I is working properly while you are doing a cleanse is to make sure you have adequate antioxidant intake. Many fruits have excellent antioxidant power, or you can take a high quality antioxidant supplement.
In Phase II the intermediate forms of the toxins are converted into water soluble forms by a number of different methods, depending on the toxin. The water soluble form can then be excreted in the bile and ultimately eliminated in the digestive tract, or excreted in the urine through the kidneys. The bile binds with fiber in the colon and THIS IS WHY IT IS CRUCIAL TO HAVE AN ADEQUATE AMOUNT OF FIBER WHILE YOU ARE DOING A CLEANSE. If either Phase I or Phase II detoxification gets over-loaded with toxic chemicals, toxins get re-absorbed into the system and may be stored in the fatty tissues of the body for years.
How Will I Feel While Cleansing?
As I mentioned before, I am in the third day of Renew Life's Organic Cleanse. So far I have felt no ill effects. To some degree, the symptoms you feel will be proportional to how toxic you are. You may get some minor headaches, feel unbalanced, be mildly nauseous, be tired or have some loose stool. This is normal. If you are getting major symptoms that affect your ability to have a normal day you may want to discontinue the cleanse. Perhaps you are not getting enough fiber and toxins are getting reabsorbed into the system all at once. Or perhaps you are sensitive to something in the cleansing formula. If you are unsure of whether to discontinue a cleanse, it is best to call the number provided by the company who makes the cleanse. The better quality companies will have a qualified individual you can talk to.
What Can I Do to Support My Body's Detoxification Process?
Eating a healthy diet is one of the best things you can do to support effective cleansing. Here are the do's and don'ts:
- eat lean meats
- avoid salty foods and table salt
- avoid alcohol, and caffeine as much as possible
- eat lots of fruits and vegetables
- avoid soda
- avoid refined sugars processed foods
- avoid dairy products
Since antioxidants and fiber are very key to your detoxing process, you may want to supplement these if you feel there are not enough of each in your diet. Some doctors recommend taking NAC (N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine) and glutathione, two antioxidants that are crucial to the detoxification phases carried out by the liver. NAC is a precursor of glutathione. The Phase II part of detoxification also requires some of the B vitamins and the amino acids glycine, taurine, and glutamine. Brewer's yeast is an excellent way to pick up all of these in your diet.
What Can I Do On an Ongoing Basis to Minimize My Toxic Load?
Educate yourself about the places in your environment where you can control toxins. We sometimes feel as if we we can't make an impact on environmental toxins, but we can definitely control our home environment to some extent as well as what we ingest. Here are some quick and easy suggestions:
- Drink filtered water and use a water filter on your shower head
- Avoid processed foods, including soda pop
- Eat organic fruits and vegetable where possible
- Minimize alcohol and caffeine
- Use biodegradable household cleaners
- Grow houseplants to provide fresh oxygen
- Exercise!
- Use natural skin care products, toothpaste, perfume, deodorant, soaps, and hair products
- Avoid dry-cleaned clothes
- Use low or no VOC paints, avoid synthetic carpets
- Buy meats and dairy product free of hormones and ethically raised
At a conference I attended recently, a speaker on the organic food movement was asked what you should say to people that say they can't afford to eat organic. His reply was to tell them "you can't afford not to". It's a pay me now or pay me later scenario. The payment later is with poor health. You will save yourself potentially a fortune in doctor's bills later on by following good health habits now. That said, organic is more expensive and we may want to buy organic only those fruits and vegetable that have the highest level of pesticides. EWG.org has a list of the "dirty dozen", those fruits and veggies that typically have the highest level of pesticides. It also identifies those that are quite safe to eat if they are conventionally grown. Don't forget too that these pesticides are getting into our water supply. It's also a matter of cleaning up the earth.
Entire books have been written about the lack of standards for the safety of skin care products and toiletries in the U.S. Several organizations have gotten together to create standards for what is called "natural" on store shelves. Right now most of these products are anything but natural. Companies like Aubrey Organics, Burt's Bees and other members of the Natural Products Association have come together to create a seal for natural products that companies can apply for. Look for this seal to identify truly natural products.
Additionally, you should know that European standards are much higher than U.S. standards. If you buy a European product like Dr. Hauschka or Weleda you can be sure that at least 40 chemicals banned in Europe but not in the U.S. will be absent from those products. Many chemicals in toothpaste, shampoo, shaving cream, body lotion, nail polish, soaps, face creams, etc. are known carcinogens or endocrine disruptors. The term "fragrance" on these products often hides a chemical group called phthalates that wreak havoc on the hormones in the body. Perfumes and colognes are perhaps the most dangerous of all. If you won't give up these product for yourself then do it for everyone else. These products are going down our drains and getting into our water supply. They are part of the reason this planet is so toxic.
So this spring, give your body the oil change it needs. A properly functioning liver and digestive system can go a long way toward keeping the body free of disease. No matter how healthy you feel or how heathy your home environment is, we all tend to have toxins just by virtue of living on this earth. Don't wait until symptoms arise, just treat yourself as well as you treat your car!!
Other factors in heart disease are inflammation, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, stress and maybe most importantly, inherited risks. Below we have broken down each of these factors and commented on some of the natural remedies that can be used for each. As stressed earlier, please speak with your doctor about these therapies before considering going off of any prescription medication or changing a program recommended by a doctor.
