Gratitiude

GRATITUDE

From the winding mountain road, the little house in the Sierras looks mundane and plain.  Its a small structure with a one-car garage surrounded by pines and oak trees.  On the right of the drive way is a pile of wood for burning in the living room fireplace. On the left and down the side of the hill a ways is a light green gas tank full of propane gas that fuels the furnace.

It takes Larry and me about three hours to drive from San Jose to Mi Wuk.  Larry drives and I get to be the passenger.  When we arrive we drive into the garage and then enter the house through the side door.  As we walk into the living room we open all of the drapes--there are large windows on the side and across the back of the house, giving us a panoramic view of the beautiful trees, sky and the mountain range a few miles away.  When you exit the sliding door on the side you walk out onto a beautiful wood deck where the squirrels and blue jays are busily eating the nuts and seeds that Larry has laid out for them.  Stepping towards the railing around the deck you can see down the steep hill where the house is built.  There are neighbors in small houses all around, but the trees and ample land make it so you hardly notice the others living here.  I love how quiet it is --even the birds barely make a sound.  It gets me in touch with the simplicity of life and how grateful I am for nature.

We make the trip about once a month--its nice to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the big city.  Sometimes I get so involved with what I am doing that I don't want to switch gears and go have a little fun.  Larry helps me to see that it's good to get away periodically and take time off.  Of course, once I let go of resistance and make the trip with him, I am always so glad.  It really helps clear my head to be in a quiet environment, relaxing and looking at the luxurious golden fall trees.

This November, I go with the flow, recognize my good and acknowledge this abundant Life.  My health, family, friends and my art are such great gifts.  If you are reading this, thank you!  I appreciate all of you who follow my work.  Happy Thanksgiving!

On our way to the mountains, we drive right past the turn-off for Yosemite National Park.  Ansel Adams created some breath-taking photos there.

Mary Medrano runs a studio and gallery in Campbell, California.  Her paintings are delightful and her gallery is fun to be in.  Last month she put on a group show of "Day of the Dead" art of which I was a part.  Click here to learn more about Mary and her work.
