O Chrismon Tree!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The decorated tree in the worship area is called a Chrismon Tree.
The Chrismon tree is highly symbolic, conveying the life of Christ and the meaning of Christmas through commonly found items i.e. musical instruments, angels, churches, fish, etc. The tree symbolizes the eternal life, which our Savior has won for us, and forms the background for the white, crystal, and gold Chrismon ornaments. The lights speak of Him who is the light of the world, and the Chrismon ornaments --CHRISMON = CHRIST+MONOgram --proclaim the name, the life, and the saving acts of Jesus Christ. Our Chrismon ornaments are simple copies of Christian symbols.
Nets for Life- Part of St. Andrew's Advent Conspiracy
Mosquito Nets for Malawi - Saving People From Malaria
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~MOsquito Net

As part of our Advent Conspiracy you may make a donation to send mosquito nets to Malawi to help prevent the spread of malaria.

 Children under 5 are most at-risk of infection.  NetsforLife® trains local residents to educate their communities about malaria, distribute nets and assist with program monitoring.

Just $12 buys one life-saving, long-lasting insecticide-treated net and saves three lives from suffering and death.  Donations can be in any amount, cash or check.  Make checks payable to St. Andrew's, with "nets" on the memo line.  You'll put your name on an ornament for the net tree and receive a mosquito net ornament to take home!

The money from this collection will be donated to Episcopal Relief & Development's NetsforLife® Inspiration Fund

Houses for Change- Part of the St. Andrew's Advent Conspiracy

Family Promise Homeless Ministry

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Houses for changeThank you to everyone who joined us this past Sunday for the kick off to St. Andrews' Advent Conspiracy. As part of Advent this year, we are handing out house-shaped boxes to each family at St. Andrew's. These houses come with a 4 week calendar- each day on the calendar gives directions for your family to count something in your house, give thanks and place an offering in the box to help homeless families.
This is a great way for families to remember to give thanks for what they have this Advent season and a way also for us to remember that there are many who are not as fortunate.
These boxes will be decorated by the families (there will be a decoration contest when the boxes are brought back) and the money will be collected throughout Advent. The boxes are due back at St. Andrew's no later than Sunday, January 9th.
The money from this collection will be donated to Family Promise of Clear Creek a ministry to homeless families in our area.
If you have not yet picked up your box, you may do so this coming Sunday. If you have misplaced your calendar, click on the "calendar" link above to open an online form of the calendar.
Thank you and have a blessed Advent!
Advent Virus
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Be on the alert for symptoms of inner Hope, Peace, Joy and Love. The hearts of a great many have already been exposed to this virus and it is possible that people everywhere could come down with it in epidemic proportions. This could pose a serious threat to what has, up to now, been a fairly stable condition of conflict in the world.

Some signs and symptoms of The Advent Virus:

·  A tendency to think and act spontaneously rather than on fears based on past experiences.

·  An unmistakable ability to enjoy each moment.

·  A loss of interest in judging other people.

·  A loss of interest in interpreting the actions of others.

·  A loss of interest in conflict.

·  A loss of the ability to worry. (This is a very serious symptom.)

·  Frequent, overwhelming episodes of appreciation.

·  Contented feelings of connectedness with others and nature.

·  Frequent attacks of smiling.

·  An increasing tendency to let things happen rather than make them happen.

·  An increased susceptibility to the love extended by others as well as the uncontrollable urge to extend it.

Please send this warning out to all your friends. This virus can and has affected many systems. Some systems have been completely cleaned out because of it.

FEAST OF ST. STEPHEN PUB MASS & BOXING DAY CELEBRATION

With the spirit of Christmas in the air, we remember the Feast of St. Stephen, deacon and martyr of the Church, who was charged with overseeing the distribution of goods to the community. It's also Boxing Day, a traditional British holiday where we remember those less fortunate in our city.

Please bring a donation of food, clothing or blankets that we will give to the Christian Community Service Center, in keeping with the Boxing Day tradition of sharing from our wealth to those most in need.

A holy and wholly good celebration!

Pub Mass at noon offered by Rev. Canon C. Andrew "Andy" Doyle to commemorate St. Stephen's feast. At 1pm, following the Mass, we will open for a festive and traditional lunch at the Mucky Duck in Houston.

The celebration of Boxing Day, which takes place on December 27 - the feast of St. Stephen, is a part of the holiday season unique to Great Britain. Traditionally, it is on this day that the alms box at every English church is opened and the contents are distributed to the poor. Also, this is the day that servants traditionally got the day off to celebrate with their families.

Ed Woodward and I attended this last year.   It was a lot of fun.  Nice lunch, $ 15- $ 25 Range, Nice beer collection, and lots of nice fellowship.

If anyone is interested in going, contact Jesse Bowman at jessebowman1@gmail.com.

Year of Service
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Murrays, Lusks, and Bettencourts met at the church the day after Thanksgiving and made 50 sack lunches and bottled water to distribute to the homeless.
Originally, we were planning to work SuperFeast but had heard that it was very hard to feel useful since there are so many volunteers at the event.  We made this plan in conjunction with the Year of Service at St. Andrews and were all excited because we wanted to share with the community during this holiday season.
We drove downtown and handed out the lunches and waters to people passing by, as well as those camped out under freeway overpasses.  It was quite an eye-opening experience for our children which is what we really wanted.  They have so much to be thankful for and sometimes don't even realize it. They were all enthusiastic and not scared of the people which was really nice to see.  Several of the kids mentioned that they were surprised and pleased at how grateful everyone was for the food.
One particular man had just been released from the hospital; he was very beat up and had his foot in a walking boot.  We opened his hospital bag with his extra clothes and put two lunches and waters in it.  He must have said thank you about 10 times-the older boys were with me and they were both touched by his vulnerability and thankfulness in the midst of all his trouble.
There was also a funny story, one woman asked where we were from and when we mentioned Pearland, she asked about the little league all-star team.  Matthew M. pointed out Matthew B. across the freeway and said he was actually on the team.  This was also an eye-opening experience for all of us to realize that just because someone is homeless, it doesn't mean they don't read the paper or pay attention to current events.
We have already decided to do it again next year.  We are thinking about trying to provide a hot breakfast, especially if it is cold.  At the very least hot coffee or cocoa.  Unfortunately, we did not take pictures but will certainly have memories to last a lifetime.
Stewardship Campaign
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

 Greetings All,

I have another update on our Stewardship campaign.

The good news is that we now have 85 pledges (out of about 160 families) for $305,858

The not so good news is that we are about $19,000 short of the minimum we had hoped to raise.

A huge thank you to everyone that has turned in their pledges.  If you have not turned your pledge, please help support the ministries at St. Andrew's and make a pledge.  Every pledge is important.

Vestry News
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Resolutions/Approvals
  • The vestry approved a revised 2011 Budget Pass 5 with the anticipation of approximately twelve additional pledges. Single revision was an increase in raises line item in Salaries of $6,000 offset by an increase in anticipated pledges by $ $6,000. Over $8,000 will now be available for raises.  A 2.5% raise will be given to select tenured program staff.  There are currently 92 pledges for a total of $328,498.
  • The vestry gave Russell Meachen, Junior Warden, the authority to review and accept bids up to $1,300 to repair fixtures and install lights that we have previously purchased for the entryway and worship area.  This is a capital expense.
The Bible 140 characters at a time
Dear Friends,
Each year, I take on a new scriptural discipline. In 2011, I hope to Twitter a chapter of the Bible each day (or, at least each week day). That means that I need to be able to summarize the entire chapter in 140 words. I will start with the Gospel of Matthew. We'll see! I do this for my own spiritual nourishment.
Anyway, if you want to get a daily 140 character Bible chapter on your phone or for your news feed or to view in a web browser, subscribe to my Tweets at @gamma909. Maybe the Twitter will encourage you to look up and read the chapter occasionally.
If you have an account, you probably know what to do. If not...
I get Matthew Paul Turner's, CS Lewis', Rick Warren's, CNN's and a few other Twitters on my phone.
If you do not understand all this, bless you. You most likely are in non-digital bliss. Let me know via email and I will send my summaries to you that way.
You are special to me and to God.
