Mosquito Nets for Malawi - Saving People From Malaria

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~MOsquito Net
St. Andrew's will be joining with NetsforLifeŽ this Advent by collecting money to send mosquito nets to Malawi to help prevent the spread of Malaria.
Fighting Malaria in Africa
In partnership with corporations, foundations, NGOs and faith-based organizations, NetsforLifeŽ implements integrated malaria-prevention programs in 17 countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
A Unique Partnership
NetsforLifeŽ accesses remote communities-those typically unreached by national health programs-by utilizing a vibrant network of local churches, faith-based groups and NGOs.  They  have mobilized thousands of community volunteers to distribute nets and teach their neighbors how to prevent and treat malaria.
More than 18 million people have benefited from NetsforLifeŽ to date.
Family Promise "Houses for Change" Collects Money to Help Homeless Families
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

 This Advent we will be participating in Family Promise's "Houses for Change" program. each Houses for changefamily will be given a cardboard "house" to decorate at home and a calendar which explains a little about homelessness and gives the family prompts about how much money (change) to put in their box each day for the 4 weeks of Advent. The calendar also helps raise awareness about what homeless families don't have and what we do.

You can pick up your family house box starting Sunday, November 28th. You will receive a cardboard house, a calendar and an ornament to put on the Family Promise tree in the Foyer of the Worship Building. We will be collecting the boxes in early January. Have fun decorating your box - we will have a fun competition with prizes for the best decorations.

Twitter Bible
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Each year, I take on a new scriptural discipline. In 2011, I hope to Twitter a chapter of the Bible each day (or, at least each week day.) That means that I need to be able to summarize the entire chapter in 140 words. I will start with the Gospel of Matthew. We'll see! I do this for my own spiritual nourishment.
Anyway, If you want to get a daily 140 character Bible chapter on your phone or for your news feed or to view  in a web browser, subscribe to my Tweets at @gamma909. Maybe the Twitter will encourage you to look up and read the chapter occasionally.
If you have an account, you probably know what to do. If not...
  • Go to http://twitter.com/
  • Sign up for an account
  • Follow @gamma909
  • Activate cell phone delivery (varies by carrier)
I get Matthew Paul Turner's, CS Lewis', Rick Warren's, CNN's and a few other Twitters on my phone.
If you do not understand all this, bless you. You most likely are in non-digital bliss. Let me know via email and I will send my summaries to you that way.
Adult Class - Old Testament
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Fr. Joe's is leading a class on the Old Testament.  The DVD lectures are by Professor Amy Jill Levine, PhD, of Vanderbilt University Divinity School.  This course is a scholarly introduction to how the Hebrew Bible was produced over a period of perhaps eight centuries, what it meant to the writers and editors over this long birth, and what meanings it may have to modern Christians and Jews.

The cost for the classes is $15.00, a real bargin considering what a Graduate School course costs. The home work will be reading in the Old Testament.

Are you interested in a 5 week class on Islam? If so, email me at frjimbo@msn.com.

I will offer the class: Sunday, starting 1/16/11 @ 9:15 am, room 102

Thank you.
